  1. In pictures: Collapsed wall causes shops to shutpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

    Here we can see the collapsed wall that caused a number of shops to shut in Cheadle earlier today.

    The Douglas Macmillan Hospice said rain water had caused rubble to collapse into the back alley behind the shops below.

    And here you can see the damage it caused.

    The hospice shop said it can't say how long it will take to clear the rubble, which has blocked the rear entrance.

  2. Village records highest hourly rainfallpublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

    Pennerley in Shropshire has the honour of recording the highest hourly rainfall in the UK today, with 25.6mm (1inch), the Met Office has said.

    That part of the county normally averages around 96mm (3.8in) during the whole of October.

    The Met Office said the heavy rain was localised and there could have been areas with more rain that didn't have a weather station to record it.

  4. Firefighters tackle garage blazepublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

    About 23 firefighters were called to deal with a fire at a garage in Handsworth, Birmingham.

    Crews were called to the blaze on Sandwell Road at 15:15 BST.

    West Midlands Fire and Rescue Service control room said it is believed to be accidental, but that has not yet been confirmed.

    It said four appliances remain at the scene, with about 18 firefighters still dealing with the fire.

    Kate Haynes in Crowle shared this footage with BBC Hereford and Worcester, showing Turnpike Road completely waterlogged after today's heavy rainfall.

    Elsewhere in Worcestershire, there has been flooding of some of the roads around junctions six and seven of the M5.

  7. Reduced rail service due to crew shortagepublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

    As if the flooding on the Nuneaton line was not enough, a shortage of train crew means fewer trains are able to run on the line between Leamington Spa and Nuneaton.

    National Rail said the delays are expected to last throughout the day, and some trains may be cancelled.

    It says road transport will operate in place of cancelled services in both directions between the two stations.

    The police have been called out to help a number of stranded motorists across the West Midlands today, including one who turned out to be driving while disqualified.

    The Central Motorways Police Group tweeted to say the driver was one of three towed to safety in Birmingham.

    The driver attempted to give false details, but was found out by a fingerprint check.

    People planning to travel by train are being advised to check their timetables, with flooding affecting a number of services.

    Some routes, such as the one between Birmingham and Nuneaton have been impassible this afternoon and others are seeing trains running at reduced speeds.

  10. Flood barriers going up in Shrewsburypublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 1 October 2019

    Low-level flood barriers are being erected in Shrewsbury with the River Severn expected to rise in the next 24 hours.

    The Environment Agency already has flood warnings for the River Vyrnwy, in north Shropshire and said the flood water is going to be making it's way down-river.

    Coventry Sikh Union hopes to create a new woodland with money raised from its 34th annual charity walk on Sunday.

    Organisers say everyone is welcome on the 15km (nine mile) walk through the city's streets , externaland can enjoy refreshments at some churches, gurudwaras and Hindu temples.

    The charity hopes to plant 550 trees, including hazel and crab apples, in Longford Park, by 12 November to mark the 550th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak, the Sikh religion's founder.

    It is part of a global initiative by Eco-Sikh to plant more than one million trees.

    Torrential showers are hitting parts of Worcestershire and Warwickshire, the Met Office says.

    A yellow warning for rain is in place until 20:00 with flood alerts and warnings issued across the West Midlands.

    All lanes of the M42 northbound in Warwickshire have just reopened after earlier flooding, but the rain is causing problems elsewhere too.

    • A38 westbound in Staunton-on-Wye in Herefordshire at Church Road
    • A449 Malvern Wells in Worcestershire, from Green Lane to A4104
    • Flash flooding is also affecting A4440 Swinesherd Way in both directions around Whittington Road
    • Alum Rock Road in Birmingham is flooded at Langton Road.
    • Gresty Lane in Shavington, Crewe is affected from Gresty Green Road to Rope Lane
    • Maw Lane in both directions in Crewe from Sydney Road to Clay Lane
    • New Street in Bupton-upon-Severn in Worcestershire is affected by the closure of flood gates

    Heavy rain has flooded the railway between Narborough and Hinckley, and as a result trains have to run at reduced speed on all lines.

    Trains between Birmingham/Nuneaton and Leicester have been cancelled until flood waters reside.

    CrossCountry services are expected to be affected until at least 18:00.
