  6. E.on plans to cut hundreds of jobs in the UKpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 15 October 2019

    Energy provider E.On has said it has told staff of plans to cut between 500 and 600 jobs.

    The company, which has its headquarters in Coventry, said suppliers in the market are "facing a significant threat to their futures" in a competitive market "massively distorted by the energy price cap."

    There are many firms "now seemingly content to run at a significant loss, it added.

    "As a result, we can confirm we have announced to colleagues a proposal to reduce between 500 and 600 roles across support activities and managerial positions in the UK," it said in a statement.

    Anderton Park staff members have been abused on social media and were filmed by a protester when they were walking around outside school, making them feel intimidated, the deputy head teacher said.

    Claire Evans was appearing on the stand at Birmingham High Court, where the city council is seeking to make an interim injunction banning protests immediately outside the school permanent.

    The school, in Balsall Heath, has been at the centre of a campaign against teaching about LGBT relationships, led by some parents and activists who say it is in conflict with their "religious beliefs and family values".

    Educational psychologist from Birmingham City Council, Amanda Daniels, told the court staff felt their “previously happy, contented community had been disrupted”.

    The hearing continues.

  8. Campaigners meet as fresh hill fort plans submittedpublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 15 October 2019

    A campaign group is meeting to discuss the latest plans for homes near Oswestry's iron age hill fort.

    Galliers Homes has submitted a planning statement for 100 homes, in two phases saying it will be no more harmful to the hillfort than that of the A5 and several other town centre developments.

    And it points out the land has been set aside for housing in Shropshire Council's local development framework.

    “Old Oswestry Hill Fort occupies a place in the midst of continual change and it is simply not possible to re-create the landscape that existed when the Hill Fort was occupied," it said.

  9. Five hurt after car overturnspublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 15 October 2019

    Five people have been injured - three of them seriously - after a car crashed and overturned in Bedworth.

    The force of the crash on Astley Lane at about 12:50 also uprooted a tree, said the ambulance service.

    The three women and two men were all in the car.

    Shrewsbury Town's Callum Lang has been ruled out until nex year after having surgery on a broken foot.

    The striker, who is on a season-long loan from Wigan Athletic, suffered the injury in the win at Tranmere a fortnight ago.

    Staff at the former Thomas Cook store in Shrewsbury are preparing to reopen it as a Hays Travel shop.

    Carly Daly (second left) lost her job when the Thomas Cook chain went out of business.

    "We were so confident in the company and the brand and were so passionate about it that we couldn't see that it would happen," she said.

    "The support that we've had from our customers, from personal messages, from contacting us has been absolutely amazing."

    And she said other travel agents in the town had stepped in to help their customers when Thomas Cook closed.

  15. Health commissioning groups merger on holdpublished at 17:38 British Summer Time 15 October 2019

    Plans to merge Shropshire's two healthcare bodies have been put on hold.

    Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Groups had wanted to combine forces next April, saying the move would save money.

    The two CCGs had applied for permission from NHS England, but were told their application needed more work and the merger wouldn't work in the timescale they had planned.

    In a joint statement, Dr Julian Povey, Chair of Shropshire CCG and Dr Jo Leahy, Chair of Telford & Wrekin CCG said: “We are both disappointed".

    The police officer struck by a car thief in a stolen police car was in court for the sentencing of the driver who hit him.

    PC Gareth Phillips was one of a number of officers called to arrest 29-year-old Mubashar Hussain on 10 August.

    Birmingham Crown Court heard Hussain was Tasered, but pulled the barbs out of his skin before getting behind the wheel of one of their cars, which had its engine running, and then driving off with it hitting PC Phillips and shattering his pelvis.

    The banned driver, who has no fixed address, had admitted causing grievous bodily harm, two counts of vehicle theft, dangerous driving, two counts of driving while disqualified, two counts of assault, assaulting an emergency worker, aggravated vehicle-taking, and two charges of having no insurance.

    He was eventually arrested in the Sparkbrook area by armed police after abandoning the car and heading into a dessert shop, where he disguised himself in an apron.

  20. Flood-affected school to remain closedpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 15 October 2019

    A school affected by a burst water main in Tipton is to remain closed on Wednesday.

    Tipton Green Junior School remains closed after 700 children were evacuated due to flooding.

    Some residents are in temporary accommodation.

    South Staffordshire Water said the repair had now been repaired and work to resurface the road had begun.
