    A car thief who ran over a police officer while trying to avoid arrest has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

    Mubashar Hussain had pleaded guilty to running over PC Gary Phillips on Moorcroft Road in Birmingham on 10 August causing grievous bodily harm, including a shattered pelvis.

    Two lorries crashed with one of them colliding with the barrier.

    The southbound carriageway is closed from M40 to A435.

  3. Hotel in former newspaper building to open next yearpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 15 October 2019

    Operators behind the transformation of the former Coventry Evening Telegraph building say the 88-bedroom hotel is set to open in September 2020.

    The £20m transformation will also see a convention room, meeting rooms and restaurant at the the 1950s building.

    The hotel is being developed by Complex Development Projects (CDP) and operated by Bespoke Hotels, the UK’s largest independent hotel group.

    The project is a flagship for the city’s drive to boost the tourist economy and will be one of the major physical legacies of the City of Culture in 2021, said CDP.

    A CCTV image has been released of a man officers would like to speak to in connection with a racially aggravated incident in Kenilworth.

    A man entered the Indian Edge restaurant on Warwick Road before verbally abusing a number of staff and making racially abusive comments.

    Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident on 27 September, said Warwickshire Police.

    Minor injury units at Ross and Leominster community hospitals will close again this winter.

    Staff will provide care at Hereford County Hospital instead, NHS bosses said.

    Wye Valley NHS Trust said it's part of a strategy to cope with the 200-plus patients that visit the County Hospital's accident and emergency department every day.

    The minor injury units in the two towns will shut from Monday 4 November, but all other services at the community hospitals will continue.

    A police officer seriously injured when he was hit by a hijacked police car is in court for the sentencing of the man who ran over him.

    PC Gareth Phillips suffered potentially life-changing injuries when he was struck by the car in Moseley, Birmingham, in August.

    Mubashar Hussain, 29, has admitted causing grievous bodily harm.

  9. Work to prevent flooding under railway bridgepublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 15 October 2019

    Action is going to be taken to prevent flooding which blocked one of the main routes into a Shropshire village recently.

    Roots from nearby trees penetrated drains near the railway bridge on Newport Road in Albrighton, meaning rainwater was slow to clear.

    Shropshire Council has promised to take action to clear the blockage as soon as possible.

    The local authority also said it would work with Network Rail and the Ministry of Defence, which has a base at nearby Cosford.

    The area's MP, Mark Pritchard, recently criticised the council over the flooding, accusing it of not taking the issue seriously enough.

  11. Hundreds of pounds raised at walk for Keeley Bunkerpublished at 13:54 British Summer Time 15 October 2019

    Friends and family of a 20-year-old woman who was found dead in woodland last month raised hundreds of pounds at a fundraising walk in her memory.

    Keeley Bunker's body was discovered near the Roman Way area of Tamworth on 19 September. Wesley Streete, also from Tamworth, has been charged with her murder.

    More than 70 people joined the Walk for Keeley on Sunday where £540 was raised, including a £50 donation from a local hotel. People were asked to wear pink in her memory.

    Organisers described it as a success and said the money will all go towards a GoFundMe page set up to cover funeral costs. More than £20,000 has so far been raised online.

    Police investigating the cause of Ms Bunker's death have described it as "unexplained" saying further post-mortem examinations were needed.

    Mr Streete is due to appear at Stafford Crown Court on 16 December.

    England and Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings says he heard racist abuse coming from the crowd before he had made it across the pitch.

    He spoke as it emerged the government is to write to Uefa on Tuesday to demand more action after England players were racially abused during a European qualifier in Sofia on Monday.

    The match, which England won 6-0, was halted twice because of racist behaviour by home fans.

    Mings, one of the players who was abused, said the manager, the team and the supporting staff came together to make the decision to play and he was very proud of the decision.

    The Archbishop of Canterbury enjoyed a bacon bap while meeting farmers at Longville.

    Events during the three-day visit to the Diocese of Hereford, includes calling in at a care home in Much Wenlock, visiting a community centre at Sutton Hill in Telford and taking part in a prayer walk up Clee Hill.

    This evening, he is due to share a drink with people at Ludlow Brewery, at a ‘Setting God’s People Free’ event, an initiative which helps people live a Christian life.

    A murder investigation has begun after an incident in Bromsgrove last night.

    Police were called at 22:00 to reports of a seriously injured man at a house on Humphrey Avenue.

    A man, in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

    The Archbishop of Canterbury has been addressing hundreds of people at St Lawrence's Church in Ludlow as part of his three-day trip to the Hereford Diocese.

    The Most Rev Justin Welby spoke about the problems of rural isolation which he said was a "really, really serious issue" in a county like Shropshire.

    A burst water pipe that caused properties to flood and a house to partially collapse has been repaired, said a water company.

    About 20 properties were affected after the pipe burst on Park Lane West in Tipton, on Monday afternoon.

    South Staffordshire Water said crews had worked throughout the night to repair the main.

    Work to reinstate the road surface will continue for the rest of the week, it added.

    The house suffered "significant" damage and has been inspected by structural engineers. There has been some repair work to make it safe until full work can be completed, said a spokesperson.
