  3. A&E plan branded 'smokescreen' for downgradepublished at 14:13 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2019

We told you earlier about a plan for emergency medicine consultants during "core hours" at an overhauled A&E service for Telford's Princess Royal Hospital (PRH).

The proposal has been criticised by the leader of Telford and Wrekin Council Shaun Davies, who said it proved the so-called A&E Local set for PRH was a "smokescreen" for a downgrade of services.

He said the consultant plan meant "a part-time service, with fewer clinicians, and with capacity to treat a much smaller number of health conditions".

Last month, the government backed NHS plans to reconfigure hospital services in Shropshire, with Shrewsbury becoming the county's centre for emergency medicine and Telford becoming a centre for planned treatment.

In a letter to the MPs for Telford and The Wrekin today, the health secretary said: "I’m delighted to write to you today to confirm that the A&E at PRH in Telford will remain open."

But Mr Davies said: "The NHS says that signage to the PRH will have to be changed and a major local communication campaign undertaken to explain to people when PRH has an A&E service."

  5. A&E replacement would have consultant for 'core hours'published at 13:47 Greenwich Mean Time 5 November 2019

The replacement for Telford's A&E would have an emergency medicine consultant for "core hours" under proposals put forward by Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust.

Plans for an overhaul of hospital services in Shropshire were green lit last month, with Royal Shrewsbury set to become the county's main emergency site while Telford's Princess Royal sees its existing acute provision become a so-called A&E Local.

It's proved controversial, with campaigners fearing lives of Telford people will be at risk if they have to travel further for emergency treatment.

Detail about the Princess Royal plan emerged in a Westminster debate called by Telford MP Lucy Allan, and were confirmed in a letter from NHS England and NHS Improvement.

    PRH A&E

It's not yet been said what "core hours" amounts to, but the NHS letter goes on to say the provision means Princess Royal "will continue to provide A&E services".

Lucy Allan and local councillors have complained changes to Telford's 24-hour A&E - and the loss of its specialist women and children's services - amount to a downgrade, and have asked the health secretary to reconsider backing for the plan.

At the debate today, Lucy Allan said the consultant proposal was a "step in the right direction" but she would continue to press for further progress.
