  1. Uninsured speeding driver jailed for killing toddlerpublished at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2019

    An uninsured driver who killed a toddler and seriously injured his mother while speeding has been jailed.

    Abid Mohmood was travelling at 59mph in a 30mph zone on Stoney Stanton Road in Coventry in April 2018 when he struck two-year-old Umar Akhalwaya and his mother, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

    The toddler was taken to hospital with severe injuries and later died.

    His mother suffered serious injuries including a bleed on her brain, as well as multiple fractures to her spine, pelvis, ribs and both arms and legs.

    At Warwick Crown Court earlier Mohmood was sentenced to seven years and two months in prison.

    The 41-year-old, who remained on the scene after the collision, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by driving while uninsured.

    Worcester Wolves host Newcastle Eagles in the British Basketball League Cup quarter final tonight.

    Their opponents have won three of the last five finals and Wolves head coach Matt Newby (pictured below) said "if you're looking at total trophies over the last few decade, there's no-one else that comes close".

    A woman accused of murdering a homeless woman who vanished from Birmingham has declined to give evidence during her trial.

    Kathleen Salmond made the decision moments after her boyfriend Kevin Flanagan refused to return to the witness box at Birmingham Crown Court today.

    The couple have been charged with murdering 39-year-old Lisa Bennett in May 2013 and then fraudulently claiming her benefits.

    The prosecution alleges that Ms Salmond, of Farnhurst Road, Hodge Hill and Flanagan, 39, of Redbrook Covert, Kings Norton, murdered Ms Bennett at their flat in Weoley Castle on or around the day she vanished and dumped her body in a bin.

    Ms Salmond, 40, and 39-year-old Mr Flanagan deny the all the charges against them.

    The trial continues.

    Worcester City Football Club is considering two different offers, which could see it return to the city.

    The team currently play their games at Bromsgrove, but last night shareholders and fans were told of the option of groundsharing with Worcester Raiders at Claines Lane in Worcester, which is currently being redeveloped by the Worcestershire FA.

    The fans were also briefed on a written offer made by the owners of Worcester Warriors, to buy the club and move it to Sixways stadium.

    However, the clubs supporters were told that offer may not still be on the table, and the board is seeking clarification from the Warriors' owners, the Bond Group.

    Another option, a move to a ground at Perdiswell, is "no longer an option", fans were told.

    No decision has been made by the club's board, which is due to meet next week, and an AGM will be held on 12 December.

    The senior midwife in charge of the investigation into failings in Shropshire's maternity services has made an appeal for affected families to get in touch.

    The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust is being investigated after a number of deaths involving babies and mothers. It is believed the inquiry is now considering more than 800 cases involving concerns over care.

    A spoken word performance by a Birmingham peace activist is being screened in London this afternoon.

    The project team said the adults and children, originally from Syria and Iran, used poetry to speak about their lives in the UK and call for protection "of people on the move in search of safety".

    “As the daughter of Pakistani migrants who came to Birmingham over 50 years ago my work now focuses on promoting social inclusion and protection of refugees," Ms Zulfiqar said.

    "While I was born in the UK, I understand the struggles of getting to grips with a new culture when your parents are from a different place."

    One man has been taken to hospital after two lorries were involved in a crash on the M6 near Birmingham.

    Three lanes of the northbound motorway remain closed between J5 and J6 after the collision at about 12:45 and there are reports of long tailbacks in the area.

    The driver of one lorry was taken to Heartlands Hospital with injuries not thought to be serious, said the ambulance service.

    An oil spill is being treated in the area, said Highways England.
