    A pedestrian has been struck by a vehicle on Foleshill Road in Coventry, closing it between Cash's Lane and Lockhurst Lane.

    The ambulance service said it was first alerted at 12:50.

    Paramedics have treated one person at the scene, but their condition is not yet known.

    World Championships silver medallist Hannah England has announced her retirement from athletics.

    The former University of Birmingham student, 32, won silver in the 1500m at the 2011 Worlds in Daegu.

    In a post on Instagram, England said she was "proud of my achievements" and "it was a privilege" to be surrounded by so many talented people.

    England featured at two Commonwealth Games, two World Championships, two European Championships and the Olympics in 2012.

  4. Council could vote for badger cull banpublished at 13:23 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2020

    Cheshire East councillors could vote today to ban badger-culling on land it owns, including rented farms.

    The culls have been taking place for the last two-and-a-half years as part of an annual government programme to try to eradicate tuberculosis in cows.

    Under council proposals, badgers on its land would be vaccinated instead.

    The National Farmers Union said the plan was worrying as the cull was working.

    We're seeing a number of flood alerts, external in the West Midlands, affecting the rivers Severn, Tern, Perry, Sow, Penk, Lugg, Avon, Swift, Leam and Frome.

    This photo was taken by a West Mercia Police officer on the A4110 between Wigmore and Adforton this morning. The Environment Agency has warned about flash flooding on roads.

    Gusty winds and heavy rain are forecast for parts of the region tonight and the Environment Agency says it expects river levels to remain high.

    A Shropshire wildlife rescue centre had its busiest year in 2019.

    Cuan Wildlife Rescue in Much Wenlock took in and cared for nearly 5,000 animals last year, around 900 more than in 2018.

    Animals they saw included 1,300 hedgehogs, 50 swans and nearly 400 ducks.

    Hereford FC have confirmed first-team coach Andy Whing has left with immediate effect.

    The club has thanked him for his professionalism during his time at Edgar Street and says it hopes to make an announcement about his replacement as soon as possible.

    Whing arrived in September last year and made a good start to his time at Hereford, but leaves with the club 16th in the National League North.

    They have won only twice in the league since the start of October.

  9. New Street overtakes Euston as one of busiest stationspublished at 12:07 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2020

    Birmingham New Street has overtaken Euston to be named the fifth busiest railway station in Britain.

    It is the only station outside London to be ranked in the top 10 busiest, with 47.9m passenger entries and exits in the year to 31 March 2019.

    London Waterloo was confirmed as the busiest station for the 16th consecutive year, with 94.2m passengers through the station.

    Greater Manchester's Denton and Cheshire's Stanlow and Thornton were named the least-used, with just 46 passengers, figures from the Office of Rail and Road showed.

    Polesworth in Warwickshire is also one of the least-used stations, with just 186 passengers.

    Shrewsbury Town believe their first FA Cup match against Bristol City proves they can spring a surprise in tonight's third round replay.

    The manager, Sam Ricketts, said his team "controlled the game" in the original tie and chief executive Brian Caldwell said: "Anybody who was there will say that we were very unlucky not to win the game."

    But Mr Caldwell accepted it would be difficult to win the replay, and said the opposition had "spent a lot of money on the players that they've got".

    The winners of the match host Liverpool in the fourth round.

    A man was stabbed during a carjacking in Dudley last night, police say. , external

    The 28-year-old was attacked in his black Toyota estate before the vehicle was stolen in Lower Derry Street, Brierley Hill, at about 19:15.

    He went to nearby Hill Street where shop staff called an ambulance.

    He's currently in hospital for treatment to his injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

    British number one Dan Evans beat Alexander Bublik to reach the quarter finals of the Adelaide International.

    Evans needed just 75 minutes to beat Kazakhstan's Bublik 7-5 6-2.

    The Birmingham player, who will be seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time when the Australian Open begins on 20 January, will face either Russia's Andrey Rublev or American Sam Querrey next.

    A man who carried out two "terrifying" sexual assaults on lone women in Leamington Spa has been jailed.

    Marius Soloman attacked a woman near Russell Terrace on 13 November before dragging a second victim into an alleyway and sexually assaulting her.

    Both victims provided a good description of Soloman and he was arrested later that day, said Warwickshire Police.

    The 26-year-old of no fixed address admitted sexual assault, assault by penetration, and robbery at a hearing on 19 December.

    At Warwick Crown Court on Monday he was sentenced to nine years in prison with an eight-year extended license for being a dangerous offender.

  16. Pedestrian struck by vehicle on bypasspublished at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2020

    A pedestrian is being treated for serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle in Crewe earlier.

    She was struck on Haslington bypass near Crewe Green roundabout just before 02:00.

    The A534 was closed for around four hours for collision investigation work.

    Officers are asking for any witnesses to get in touch.

    A man has died after the car he was driving struck a tree in Worcestershire.

    The single-vehicle crash happened on Goosehill lane, in Broughton Green, Hanbury shortly before 15:00 on Monday.

    Despite being given life support care he died at the scene, said the ambulance service.
