    Private hire taxi drivers will be able to drive through the bus gate in Coventry City Centre from 10 March.

    Until recently only black cabs, buses and cyclists could go through the Whittle Arch bus gate on the junction of Trinity Street and Fairfax Street.

    The arch was unveiled in 2003 as a memorial to the jet engine pioneer Sir Frank Whittle.

  4. Road worker hit by car badly injuredpublished at 15:37 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2020

    A road maintenance worker has suffered multiple injuries after being hit by a car on the A458 between Much Wenlock and Bridgnorth this morning.

    West Mercia Police said it happened at around 11:00 and the 56-year-old is being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for a broken leg, broken arm and facial injuries.

    Police said the road was very foggy at the time the collision took place.

  5. Heritage railway to address its carbon footprintpublished at 15:21 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2020

    The new woman in charge of the Severn Valley Railway says it will have to look at its carbon footprint in the future and conceded "we're using a lot of coal".

    Helen Smith has taken over as the heritage railway's general manager and said part of her role was to prepare it for the future and said the board was "very active" on issues like this.

    Ms Smith, who was previously deputy director of the Tank Museum in Dorset, said there had to be a balance, and at the same time, "we want to carry on operating steam engines as they were always operated".

    The line, which runs roughly 16 miles between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, operates a mix of steam and diesel locomotives, carrying some 250,000 passengers a year.

    Hereford's MP has accused the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership of "absolutely diabolical" behaviour over the city's new university.

    Speaking in a debate in Westminster Hall, Jesse Norman said the LEP "has done nothing but prevaricate and delay" the NMITE project, including demanding a £5m indemnity on government investment.

    Mr Norman said "the government's made it clear as early of January of last year that no such indemnity was required".

    The Marches LEP said it had approved all £8m of government funding and had consistently supported the project since its inception.

    A teenager's been charged after a 15-year-old boy was "seriously injured" in a stabbing in Birmingham.

    West Midlands Police said officers were called to Grantham Road in the Sparkbrook area of the city on Monday afternoon.

    The victim was found with serious stab wounds and is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

    A Warwickshire boss says she wants to see more "support, flexibility and open conversations" for workers who are feeling the effects of stress or other mental health problems.

    Sarah Windrum from the Emerald Group was responding to a study by consultants at Deloitte which says employees' mental health issues cost businesses more than £40bn a year.

    She has suffered from depression and anxiety herself and also says she encourages her staff to take the day off if they're feeling unwell, rather than drag themselves in to the office.

    The closure of a Staffordshire community hospital and the scrapping of beds at three others will see them replaced with four care hubs at a cost of £30m.

    The two clinical commissioning groups in the north of the county, who buy and monitor healthcare, made the decision yesterday., external

    Cheadle Hospital will close while only Haywood Hospital, in Stoke-on-Trent, will continue to have community beds, 77 of them, with another 55 at local care homes.

    At the other hospitals, in Longton, Leek and Bradwell as well as at Haywood, the beds will be replaced by "integrated care hubs" with the Longton one based in a building which will be purpose-built.

    The hubs will host specialist teams such as physiotherapy and palliative care but won't have beds.

    Birmingham MP Jess Phillips says dropping out of the Labour leadership contest won't stop her campaigning.

    In a video message to supporters, the Birmingham Yardley MP said the next leader had to be able to unite the whole Labour movement.

    Ms Phillips said she had to "be honest" with herself - "that person is not me".

    Four candidates are still in the race to succeed Jeremy Corbyn - Sir Keir Starmer, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Emily Thornberry and Lisa Nandy.

    Coventry City Council is taking legal action against a local takeaway, over a "alleged cockroach infestation".

    The decision to start proceedings against Fried Chicken Express at 180 Lythalls Lane, Holbrooks, was agreed in private by councillors at a meeting of the council’s licensing and regulatory committee on 10 December, but has now appeared in council minutes.

    The minutes do not provide dates of when the allegation was discovered, or any further detail.

    No court date has been set.

    The Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands says he's had 1,000 responses to a survey, external he's set up to gauge people's experiences of West Midlands Trains.

    David Jamieson has previously said the franchise is putting public safety at risk over continual delays and cancellations.

    West Midlands Trains has acknowledged issues with delays and cancellations to services and overcrowded trains, but said commuters will start to see the benefits of a £1bn investment programme this year.

    It will includes new trains and increased compensation for delays and cancellation.

    The government's been urged by a Stoke-on-Trent MP to move civil service jobs to his city.

    Stoke South's Jack Brereton told the House of Commons this lunchtime it would be the "perfect place" with office costs being cheaper than London and being only 90 minutes away on the train.

    The Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly replied by saying they wanted to make the civil service "less London-centric".

    He added a programme had been started to relocate roles out of the capital to "all parts of the UK".

    A "truck-load" of rubbish has been dumped in front of a church in Staffordshire.

    Elaine Evans, vicar of St Bertelin's Church, Stafford, told the BBC a dog walker knocked on her door this morning to alert her.

    She found the rubbish on the church's car park , externaland said it wasn't there when she left last night at 20:30.

    Ms Evans said she'd been told she had to contact the Environment Agency for it to investigate, due to the size of the fly-tipping.
