    An inquest has been opened and adjourned following the death of a lift engineer at the Muller dairy factory in Market Drayton on Tuesday.

    Lewis James McFarlin who was 24 and from Stoke died following an accident while he was working on a service lift.

    The Health and Safety Executive is investigating and the inquest has been adjourned until 24 April.

    A man is due in court after a police officer was injured in a crash in Tamworth.

    The 35-year-old defendant from Quinton is accused of failing to stop, dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and possession with intent to supply heroin.

    He was arrested by Staffordshire Police on Tuesday and is set to appear at the North Staffordshire Justice Centre.

  3. Latest woodchip factory fire prompts inquiry callpublished at 11:05 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2020

    The week-long fire at Chirk's Knonospan woodchip factory near Oswestry has prompted calls for an independent inquiry.

    Welsh Assembly Shadow Minister Llyr Gruffydd said the fire this month was the 17th in 18 years and wants permanent air-quality monitoring.

    Mr Gruffydd said in the days immediately after the fire, traces of the formaldehyde were found, which is known to cause cancer.

    Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the fatal crash in Quinton to come forward.

    Det Sgt Paul Hughes from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We’ve launched an investigation into the circumstances of this collision.

    “I’d ask anyone who saw what happened and hasn’t already spoken to us, to contact me or my team as soon as possible.

    “A man has sadly lost his life, his family have been informed and our specialist officers will provide support to them.

    “If you saw anything or have dashcam footage please contact us.”

    An 18th Century cellar, which was discovered by accident by workmen in Shrewsbury, won't be filled with concrete, as Shropshire Council had originally planned.

    The cellar was found under the corner of Murivance and St John’s Hill and it's believed that one of the walls is part of a medieval gate tower.

    Following concerns from the public, Shropshire Council has come up alternative plans to cap the cellar instead.

    A police collision investigation is being carried at the scene in Quinton, where a pedestrian has died.

    A stretch of Hagley Road West is likely to remain closed for the next couple of hours after a 45-year-old man died after being struck by the van.

    The van driver, 24, remains in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

    The USA blues musician Seasick Steve has been confirmed as one of the headline acts for this year's LakeFest at Eastnor Castle in August.

    He'll play the main stage on the Friday night after the Stereo MCs and Ash.

    Echo and the Bunnymen will be performing on the opening night and T'Pau and the Boomtown Rats have been booked to close the festival, near Ledbury.

    The organisers are promising to reveal Lakefest's "biggest ever headline act", who will perform on the Saturday night.

    The ambulance service has also issued a statement on this morning's fatal crash in Quinton.

    It says paramedics arrived to discover a pedestrian "with multiple serious injuries following the collision".

    Ambulance staff performed specialist trauma care and administered advanced life support at the scene.

    “However, despite their best efforts, it sadly became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

    “The van driver, a man, was uninjured in the incident.”

    Hagley Road West remains closed at the junction of Ridgeway Avenue, and is likely to remain closed until lunchtime.

    More than 100 bikers are expected to attend the funeral of a three-year-old boy from Leamington Spa who loved motorbikes.

    Romeo Ferreira died of a brain tumour on 30 December.

    His parents have invited local motorcyclists to join the funeral procession to "make heaven hear their engines".

    Police have now confirmed a man has died after being hit by a van in Quinton this morning.

    He was struck at the junction of Ridgeway Avenue and Hagley Road West at about 06:15.

    The van driver, a 24-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, said West Midlands Police.

    He remains in custody, the force added.

  12. Serious crash road closure affecting surrounding routespublished at 09:40 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2020

    A serious crash on Hagley Road West in Quinton is causing congestion in the area.

    The road closure at the junction with Ridgeway Avenue is expected to remain in place throughout the morning.

    There's now congestion to Quinton Expressway, down to the Quinton Business Park roundabout.

    Traffic is also very slow around Harborne as traffic attempts to divert around the area, traffic data firm Inrix is reporting.

    A man has been stabbed in Nuneaton during an attack which saw two men leave the scene on a moped.

    The victim, in his 20s, was approached on Snowdon Close on Tuesday afternoon and stabbed in the arm.

    A 24-year-old man from the town, arrested on suspicion of GBH and criminal damage, has been released on police bail.

    A serious crash that's closed Hagley Road West in Quinton involves a car and a pedestrian, says the ambulance service.

    Crews were alerted shortly after 06:00.

  15. 'Kind, caring, loving' - cyclist hit by car namedpublished at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2020

    The family of a cyclist who died after being struck by a car in Coventry has described him as "kind, caring, funny and loving."

    Thirty-eight-year-old Chris Carey was hit shortly before 06:30 on Tamworth Road, Keresley, on Monday.

    The car's driver stopped at the scene and was assisting officers with their inquiries, said West Midlands Police. , external

    In a tribute, Mr Carey's family said: "He lit up the lives of everyone who knew him and will be desperately missed."

    Police have been granted stop-and-search powers in part of Birmingham after a boy was stabbed.

    The order was granted for Sparkbrook following an attack on a 15-year-old on Grantham Road on Monday.

    Another 15-year-old boy has been charged with wounding and has been remanded to appear before Birmingham Crown Court on 19 February.
