    Stained glass windows featuring some of Roald Dahl's most famous characters have been unveiled at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

    Characters from The BFG, The Enormous Crocodile and The Giraffe and The Pelly and Me have been brought to life.

    The hospital hopes the window will help put ill children more at ease.

  2. Man arrested in 1990s rape investigationpublished at 14:59 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2020

    A man has been arrested on suspicion of a series of rapes in Nuneaton and the West Midlands, police say.

    The attacks took place between June 1996 and September 1998, said Warwickshire Police., external

    The arrest was carried out by officers from Devon and Cornwall Police.

    He remains in police custody.

  3. Street search for hidden knivespublished at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2020

    The police and volunteers are carrying out searches for hidden knives on the streets of Crewe this afternoon.

    Last year 450 violent crimes were reported in south Crewe and Cheshire Police said it has carried out seven stop-and-search operations to try and deter people from carrying weapons.

    The police force said it was looking at other ways of reducing the number of knives on the street, including intercepting knives that are ordered online.

    Hereford could become a traffic light-free city, in a bid to reduce congestion.

    The idea has been put forward by the It’s Our County councillor John Harrington, who is responsible for transport in Herefordshire, as part of a review of road transport.

    The council has already put plans for a city bypass and southern link road on hold, pending reports on the schemes.

    Mr Harrington said he'd had the backing of Highways England for removing traffic lights and that trials would be carried out, to see how it works.

    His party runs the local authority in a coalition with the Green Party and independents, and he said he would also like to follow the lead of Seville and make a big investment in cycle paths, to get more people using a bike.

  7. University concerned by China coronavirus outbreakpublished at 14:02 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2020

    Birmingham City University says it’s “concerned by the emerging situation” in China where a new virus has killed 17 people.

    Authorities have suspended planes and trains in and out of Wuhan - a city of 11 million people - as well as all public transport within the city in an effort to contain the new strain of coronavirus.

    Similar measures will take effect in nearby Huanggang, a city of more than seven million, as of midnight.

    A university spokesperson said: “Along with a number of other UK universities with links in Wuhan, Birmingham City University has two longstanding and prestigious partnerships based in the city.

    “We are concerned by the emerging situation in Wuhan and are taking steps to support all staff and students based there as well as those who travel frequently to teach in Wuhan.”

    It said courses were currently closed for Chinese New year and plans to return were "now under review".

    Coventry University, which has a large population of students from China said it had communicated government advice to all students and staff, and would be monitoring for updates.

    The Port Vale manager John Askey has said he's doing everything he can to convince David Worrall to stay at the club.

    The winger is out of contract in the summer - he has had an impressive season and made 90 starts for the club since arriving in August 2017.

    Askey also said the efforts to persuade players to sign was a never-ending process and explained, "that comes from how you treat people day-in-day-out. Sometimes it'll come down to money, sometimes it'll come down to how they feel and how they're playing."

    Perhaps not a huge surprise, but Shrewsbury Town's match against Liverpool in the FA Cup has sold out, before tickets even went on general sale.

    The fourth-round game will be played on Sunday 26 January and the last few tickets were sold to fans with loyalty points from attending previous games.

    This rare black swan has been spotted on the River Severn in Bewdley.

    They are usually found in Australia, but the RSPB said they occasionally turn up in this country, because some were brought over as ornamental birds like peacocks.

    They have been spotted on the Severn from time to time, but the RSPB said attempts to breed them in this country haven't met with much success, because of competition from our native swans.

  13. Report says 'little progress' made in child protectionpublished at 12:35 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2020

    Herefordshire Council has been criticised in a report by Ofsted, external for making "little progress" in the protection of children.

    Ofsted last carried out an inspection into children's services in June 2018, external, when the council was handed an improvement notice and this latest report follows a return visit on 18 December.

    The report said areas of concern had "still not been resolved" and added "services remain challenged by vacancies as well as turnover of staff and ongoing difficulties in attracting experienced staff".

    Herefordshire Council said no child was being left at risk of significant harm - a finding confirmed in the latest report.

    Officers investigating the murder of a student in Walsall two years ago at a house party have arrested a man.

    Rezwan Ali, 19, died at a house in Willows Road, Walsall, West Midlands at about 01:45 on 14 January 2018.

    He collapsed in the kitchen after being stabbed in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

    A 20-year-old man, from West Bromwich, has been re-arrested on suspicion of his murder and is currently in custody, said West Midlands Police.

    A dog walker accused of losing several pets in her care has admitted four counts of breaching licence conditions.

    Louise Lawford is alleged to have been looking after at least five dogs when they went missing during a walk in woods in Staffordshire, in June.

    Owners said Ms Lawford, who operated Pawford Paws in Sutton Coldfield, had not revealed what happened to the pets.

    She admitted breaching licence conditions limiting the number of dogs she boarded at one time.

    It should have been no more than three when some days it was seven or eight, Birmingham Magistrates' Court has heard.

    Charges relating to the missing dogs have been dropped, the court heard.

  17. Resident assaulted after men force entry to homepublished at 11:47 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2020

    A resident was assaulted after three men forced entry to a property in Stratford-upon-Avon, police said.

    Nothing was stolen in the incident on Congreve Close on Monday night.

    A further two incidents in the area are also being linked, said Warwickshire Police. , external

    Alcohol was stolen from a property on Scott Close, Bidford-on-Avon at some point between Sunday and Tuesday.

    At about 10:00 on Tuesday a sledge hammer was used to try and gain entry to a different property on Congreve Close.

    Officers are asking for anyone with information to come forward.
