  1. Coronavirus tests for man after Wuhan visitpublished at 17:41 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2020

    Blood tests are being carried out to see whether a Birmingham resident has contracted the new coronavirus, Public Health England (PHE) has confirmed.

    PHE said the man, from Harborne, had returned to the UK from Wuhan, China - the city at the epicentre of the outbreak - on 31 December. It added while that was more than 14 days ago, he was being tested because he had shown symptoms during the period.

    The man is awaiting his test results in hospital. They are expected in the next 48 hours, PHE says.

    So far, there are no confirmed UK cases.

    PHE advised anyone returning from Wuhan to self-isolate for 14 days, even if they weren't showing symptoms, external.

    Population changes could see a review of Telford and Wrekin Council ward boundaries before the next local elections.

    A council committee was told the number of voters to councillors varied by as much as 25% between some wards, with members considering an approach to the Local Government Boundary Commission (LGBC) to request a review.

    One of the biggest changes has been in Lawley, where the population has risen from 6,100 to 7,600 in the last four years, but there is still no ward bearing its name.

    The LGBC carries out reviews automatically when the difference between any one ward and the average across the council reaches 30%, but local authorities can request reviews ahead of the marker being reached.

    Telford and Wrekin councillors agreed to investigate further before making a decision about requesting a review from the LGBC.

  4. Hospital sees increase in violence at A&Epublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2020

    Staff at Hereford County Hospital say they've seen an increase in violent behaviour at A&E, including patients making threats, punching walls, throwing furniture, and attempts to break into medicine cabinets.

    On one occasion, the Wye Valley NHS Trust said, young patients had to be moved for their own safety.

    The trust said it was talking with police about extra security measures and there would be more officers on patrol at the hospital.

    A university lecturer from Birmingham who is in Wuhan, the centre of the Coronavirus alert, says the UK government isn't doing enough to help and inform Britons trapped there.

    UK citizens in Wuhan and surrounding areas said that while other countries prepared evacuations, they had been given little information.

    The US and Japan are sending planes to Wuhan for its citizens.

    Maeve Clarke, who has been in Wuhan for a month and was due to fly home yesterday, says the government "hasn't responded quickly enough".

    She said: "We still don't know exactly what the plans are."

    Downing Street says the Foreign Office is "urgently exploring options" for British nationals to leave the region.

    Cheshire East Council is going to wait another 12 months before scrapping its cabinet and replacing it with a number of decision-making committees.

    The idea was a manifesto promise from the Independent Group before it entered a coalition with Labour after last year's local elections. Councillors had voted to introduce the change in May.

    The UK has decided to let Huawei continue to be used in its 5G networks but with restrictions, despite pressure from the US to block the firm.

    China's Huawei will be banned from supplying kit to "sensitive parts" of the network, known as the core.

    Peter Sommer, a cyber security expert and professor of Digital Forensics at Birmingham City University, said the government would have taken a lot of advice on the risks of giving Huawei access to the UK's 5G network.

    "The heads of the major security agencies have given this, not a clean bill of health, but are saying they can manage the risk," Mr Sommer said.
