  19. Shrewsbury Town count cost of VARpublished at 18:15 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2020

    BBC Radio Shropshire Sport

As if being denied an FA Cup goal by VAR wasn't bad enough, Shrewsbury Town had to pay £10,000 for the privilege.

The club's chief executive, Brian Caldwell, said the money came off last night's gate receipts, which were already reduced because Liverpool decided to field an under-23 side.

Around 8,000 Shrewsbury fans were dreaming of pulling off an upset when Shaun Whalley put the ball in the net, only for it to be overruled because of an offside in the build-up.

Shrewsbury manager Sam Ricketts said afterwards that they had to trust the technology, but questioned why there was VAR in the replay when it wasn't used in the original tie.

    Quote Message

The remarkable thing now is, because they've got VAR, the cost of that comes off the gate. We're paying for that as well, so that's nearly £10,000 that comes off the gate receipts."
