  3. MP's 'blood boiling' over Wales' lockdown stancepublished at 12:56 British Summer Time 11 May 2020

An MP has told BBC Radio Shropshire his "blood is boiling" over neighbouring Wales' decision not to follow England's easing of lockdown restrictions.

Under new guidelines announced last night, people in England can "drive to other destinations" for a walk, but in Wales, people cannot travel "a significant distance" from home.

Daniel Kawczynski, Conservative MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, says the differences are "damaging and frightening" for border communities like Shropshire.

He took to Twitter to criticise the Welsh Assembly.

Even the rain has not stopped him hosting workouts - Toby had his neighbours joining in from their front rooms using a group messenging app so he could still instruct them.

    Well done Toby, top marks.

The child - taken to intensive care with serious head and facial injuries - was one of two patients. The other was a man whom the ambulance service said had also come off the bike.

Police said the 42-year-old suffered serious injuries.

The Staffordshire force - which on Monday said both were in a stable condition - had suggested yesterday that other vehicles could be involved, but later stated that it believed there were none.

  7. 'Baby steps' to ease lockdown 'appropriate' says mayorpublished at 12:20 British Summer Time 11 May 2020

The mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, says it's appropriate to start easing some of the lockdown restrictions.

Boris Johnson will make a statement to MPs this afternoon sharing more of his plans to ease some restrictions that were announced last night.

Mr Street, Conservative, told BBC WM: "My own reaction is that it is appropriate now just to begin to say 'let's take [what some people have described as] the baby steps that we can', subject to them proving to be safe."

There has been criticism that the prime minister's message on Sunday evening lacked clarity.

Mr Street conceded Boris Johnson's broadcast had been light on clarity, but said that was inevitable during a 12-minute speech when "so many individual situations" still needed "to be answered". He added he expected detail to emerge in the Commons later.

Mr Street also restated what he thought was the emphasis of the prime minister's speech - caution, with health uppermost in mind:

    Quote Message

The emphasis of the announcement is that the health issues [are] absolute paramount. [The prime minister] stressed time and time again that the steps are conditional - he did say we're just beginning to ease the lockdown in very cautious ways."

A light show began at the club's ground before music was played by DJs.

    BBC News

Good morning. I'd like to tell you about an amazing family I met who have gone above and beyond to help others during lockdown.

Every Sunday Niamh, Scarlett and Billie, from Solihull, make a roast dinner for older people who are self-isolating.

Their parents Tony and Rachel Geraghty, who run a butchery business, pay for all of the food themselves.

  10. PM's slogan change 'far from clear'published at 10:17 British Summer Time 11 May 2020

A microbiologist at Staffordshire University has told BBC Radio Stoke he thinks the government should be sending out clearer advice after the PM's message changed yesterday from "stay home" to "stay alert".

These are what the new lockdown rules look like, and how the government broke down its message on Twitter:

Dr Arthur Hosie thinks there's a lack of clarity, though, and says that could pose a public health risk.

"The slogan change in my opinion was a very bad mistake - from a public health point of view we need a clear message and this is far from clear," he said.

Dr Hosie is not alone in his criticism. Here's what Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer had to say.

BBC health correspondent Nick Triggle wonders here whether the prime minister is trying to achieve the impossible.

  11. Pair picking up new car reported for lockdown breachpublished at 10:02 British Summer Time 11 May 2020

Motorway police have taken action against two people travelling on the M6 to pick up a new car during lockdown.

At the weekend, the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) tweeted that the driver and passenger had been reported for breach of restrictions.

Some Twitter users were critical in response, with one person describing the move as "heavy handed".

CMPG said the journey from the Midlands to the north for the sake of a new car could not be classed as "essential".

Worcestershire County Council member Tony Miller says the authority is doing what it can to stop queues of traffic from blocking the roads.

    BBC Business News

Footfall fell by more than 80% after all but essential shops closed their doors, according to footfall analysts Springboard.

At 20 smaller town centres, including Kenilworth and Dudley, footfall decreased by less than 60%.

Meanwhile, major city centres such as Liverpool, Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol and London were among the 20 areas that saw the biggest drops in footfall.

"The overriding focus on safe shopping and the greater emphasis on community that has come to the fore means that trips to larger towns and cities have been curtailed," a spokesman said.
