    A man in his 70s has been treated for burns after a fire at a property in Biddulph this morning.

    The air ambulance was called to Highfield Place just before 11:15 and took him to hospital in Birmingham.

  2. 'Magnet for crime' mortuary to be demolishedpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 13 May 2020

    A disused mortuary and toilet block at a cemetery which local residents said were "a magnet for rough sleepers, drug users and prostitutes" will be demolished.

    Newcastle Borough Council has approved its own plans to knock down the buildings within Newcastle Cemetery, after getting complaints from residents.

    Barry Amor, of Balcombe Close, wrote a letter to the council, claiming the buildings are structurally unsafe, an eyesore and was linked to recent burglaries and assaults.

    Car parks in the Malvern Hills have reopened today, to stop people parking on roads and grass verges.

    The Malvern Hills Trust said it was making the move because it was expecting more visitors, following the governments decision to relax lockdown restrictions.

    But Duncan Bridges, CEO of the Malvern Hills Trust said: “We are asking the public not to rush to visit the Hills, as we do not want to see a repeat of the bank holiday crowds.”

    Childminders in England can reopen today if they are caring for children from the same household, the government announced late last night.

    The move follows confusion about when childminders could reopen.

    "Childminders have been told three different things about plans to reopen in a matter of days," said Neil Leitch of the Early Years Alliance (EYA).

    The EYA said it received news of the change to government guidance in an email just after 18:30 on Tuesday.

    During lockdown, registered childminders have either been closed or providing care for vulnerable children or children of key workers.

    The Port Vale owner, Carol Shanahan, has said she'll have to put more money into the club to keep it running, despite the government's furlough scheme being extended.

    She said the continuing uncertainty over the football season meant more costs and no matchday income.

    The club's players, backroom and office staff have been placed on the scheme with their wages are being topped up by the business itself.

    New guidance issued by the College of Policing says officers in England have "no powers" to enforce two-metre social distancing., external

    It says that government guidance - which also includes advice to avoid public transport and wear face coverings in enclosed spaces - is not enforceable.

    The College of Policing, a professional body set up to support police across England and Wales, reminded officers that despite changes announced by the prime minister on Sunday, people are still not allowed to leave their homes without a reasonable excuse.

    The reasons for being out of your home have been expanded, however.

    For example you are now allowed out to collect collect goods from a business permitted to remain open, visit recycling centres, garden centres and outdoor sport courts and golf courses.

    You are also allowed to take exercise with one member of another household or, as before with members of your own household.

    Gatherings of three or more people from different households, however, are still not permitted.

    A man's been arrested after reports another man was threatened with an axe in Leominster last month.

    The 23-year-old from the Leominster area is being held on suspicion of threats to destroy or damage property following the incident on 26 April.

  9. Tennis club gets coronavirus supportpublished at 11:32 British Summer Time 13 May 2020

    Bishop's Castle Tennis Club has received a grant of £1,800 to help it get through the coronavirus lockdown.

    The money was awarded by Sports England and some of the money will help with the cost of maintenance.

    Play will begin there next week after preparations have been made to make it safe for singles games only.

  10. Household recycling centre to open with restrictionspublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 13 May 2020

    The Anchor Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre in Wolverhampton is going to reopen on Friday.

    City of Wolverhampton Council said it was expecting it to be busy, and that it should only be for essential visits.

    The council said there could be long queues at the site and people would need to show a household bill and photo ID to prove they were a Wolverhampton or Dudley resident.

    In addition, a maximum of two people per vehicle will be allowed on to the site and there will be no vans or trailers allowed.

    An Asda store in Telford is applying to build new storage facilities, to keep up with the “current and future demand for home shopping”.

    The company said it would mean a "small extension" to the existing home shopping section to "create additional storage space" and a new freezer area.

    Asda said the extension would only be open to its staff and wouldn't make the public part of the store any bigger.

  13. Administrators hopeful for newspaper's futurepublished at 10:07 British Summer Time 13 May 2020

    Administrators say they are optimistic that a buyer can be found for the Stratford Herald newspaper.

    It has been printing since 1860, but has been put into administration after a fall in advertising during the coronavirus outbreak.

    Nine people have been made redundant.

    A Shropshire golf club has decided to reopen today, despite being partly in Wales.

    While the government has lifted some lockdown restrictions and will allow people to play golf again, the Welsh Assembly has not, but Llanymynech Golf Course near Oswestry said it had followed guidance from its governing bodies.

    The club, which said coronavirus had left it in a precarious position financially, also said most of its members lived in England.

    Officers using stop and search powers have arrested six people in Birmingham "in response to a series of violent incidents and disorders in recent weeks".

    A total of 32 people were stopped, resulting in six arrests and the seizure of four vehicles.
