    People returning to work are being advised to avoid public transport if they can.

    Rail and bus services across the West Midlands are due to be increased from Monday.

    Waiting areas and platforms will be marked to help people keep a safe distance from each other.

    West Midlands Railway said it will have a new timetable from Monday and will be restoring the Birmingham to Hereford service that was put on hold at the start of lockdown on 27 March.

    A man was shot in Birmingham yesterday evening.

    Police were called to Great Hampton Row near the Jewellery Quarter at about 19:00.

    A 20-year-old man was taken to hospital and remains in a serious condition.

    The remains of a “pride and joy” car which was stolen and stripped of parts has been left abandoned in the street.

    Sutton Walmley and Minworth councillor David Barrie took the picture of the remains of a red 2013 Ford Fiesta after it was abandoned in Old Kingsbury Road.

    Councillor Barrie tweeted, external: “Stolen car in Old Kingsbury Road – police present plus breakdown truck to remove. Someone’s pride and joy stripped of engine and parts.”

    West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said the incident is likely to be part of a “chop shop” trend where criminals steal the front part of a car and attach it to another which has been written off.

    The demolition of the New College buildings in Wellington is expected to start later this year.

    Telford and Wrekin Council is drawing up plans for the King Street site, but says the Edwardian school building, which has Grade II listed status, will remain.

  17. Furlough scheme extension welcomed by mayorpublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    The Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, has welcomed an extension of the scheme to pay wages of workers on leave because of coronavirus.

    It's set to be extended to October, chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced, confirming that employees will continue to receive 80% of their monthly wages up to £2,500.

    Mr Street tweeted it was "decisive action" to "protect jobs, businesses and livelihoods".

  18. Malvern Hills car parks to reopenpublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 12 May 2020

    Car parks around the Malvern Hills will reopen tomorrow to allow people to visit.

    Duncan Bridges, CEO of the Malvern Hills Trust, said he was expecting to see an increase in visitor numbers following the government's decision to relax some lockdown restrictions.

    He said "we appreciate that some local people have concerns relating to the reopening of the car parks", but added the alternative was "visitors parking on the verges and along roadsides".

    Urging precaution, he suggested people should exercise locally if they could, and not visit what he called "honey pot" locations in the area such as British Camp. "We do not want to see a repeat of the Mothering Sunday crowds,” he said.

    The car parks have been closed since 27 March.
