About 20 unemployed workers are chasing every job vacancy in poorer parts of the UK, with that number rising to 50 in the areas worst affected by coronavirus, a study shows.
The Institute for Employment Studies (IES) found that as many as 50 people were chasing every job in 11 local authorities, including Telford and Wrekin in the West Midlands.
By contrast, there were 12 more affluent local authorities with as few as three claimants per vacancy, including the Warwickshire town of Warwick.
The government said it had supported the economy with unprecedented action.

A Telford taxi driver who murdered his pregnant girlfriend, her sister and their mother in a house fire has had his application for parole denied.
Azhar Ali Mehmood was jailed for life 19 years ago for starting the fire in Leegomery which claimed the lives of Lucy Lowe, Sarah Lowe and Linda Lowe.
The Parole Board said it "carefully examined a whole range of evidence, including details of the original case, and any evidence of behaviour change," and made the decision based on the risk his release might cause the public.
Last year a BBC documentary spoke to Mehmood's daughter Tasnim, who was found wrapped in blankets after the fire.
Phillip Blackwell, 55, assaulted women in Birmingham, Nuneaton and Cornwall between 1997 and 2019.
