  1. Man arrested after police motorcyclist injured in pursuitpublished at 11:28 British Summer Time 26 June 2020

    A driver has been arrested after a police motorcyclist was struck after a pursuit in Shropshire.

    West Mercia Police said he sustained minor injuries in the incident near the A458 in Much Wenlock at about 15:30 on Thursday, when he was hit by the car after an initial pursuit.

    The officer was not seriously injured in the collision, but did receive hospital treatment for minor injuries, said the force.

    The driver is in custody having been arrested for multiple offences, it added.

    Thunderstorms could cause flooding and travel disruption across the West Midlands later, the Met Office is warning.

    The yellow warning is in place from 12:00 until 09:00 on Saturday.

    Lightning and hail are also expected, it added.

    Their derby draw against Birmingham last Saturday was enough to see them leapfrog Leeds at the top on goal difference, despite the Baggies passing up several chances to break the deadlock.

    But they can expect a real tussle from fellow promotion hopefuls Brentford, who are the division's top scorers having netted two more than Albion's 64 goals this term.

    A hospital trust that was struggling with a massive deficit of more than £60m has turned its finances around to record a surplus of £5.2m within 12 months.

    At the end of the 2018-19 financial year, the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust was £63.6m in the red, having been placed in financial special measures in 2017.

    But it agreed a "control total" of a £32m deficit target to work towards this past financial year, with NHS bosses offering it a £32m incentive if it hits it.

    At a board meeting this week, hospital bosses heard it had not just hit the goal but had gone past it, recording a £5.2m surplus at the end of 2019-20.

    The trust runs the Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent and County Hospital, Stafford.

    A man has been arrested after another man was attacked with a weapon.

    Officers were called to an address in Victoria Street, Chesterton in Newcastle-under-Lyme just after 19:00 on Thursday, police said.

    A man was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

    The arrested man, from the local area, remains in custody, said Staffordshire Police.

  9. 'Hundreds' in city park 'unacceptable'published at 08:52 British Summer Time 26 June 2020

    "Hundreds" of people gathered in a Birmingham park last night, according to a local MP.

    Jack Dromey, Labour MP for the city's Erdington area, tweeted the gathering was the second time crowds had breached social distancing regulations in Sorrel Park.

    One local resident tweeted, external that he had witnessed up to 200 people there.

    The owner of some of the UK's biggest shopping centres, Intu, has warned that it is likely to call in administrators.

    The firm, which owns the Merry Hill centre near Dudley and Potteries centre in Stoke-on-Trent, said it had not reached an agreement in financial restructuring talks with its lenders.

    Intu warned earlier this week that its troubles could see entire sites shut.

    Intu has already lined up administrators KPMG as a "contingency" in case talks fail.

    About 132,000 jobs in the company and in its wider supply chain will be in question should the firm fall into administration.

    Friends and relatives have been allowed to visit three care homes in Shropshire for the first time in nearly three months after thermal cameras were installed.

    Coverage Care, which runs 14 homes across the county, said it was spending £50,000 on the equipment , externalwhich can scan people's body temperature.

    Anyone with a raised temperature won't be allowed in and chief executive David Coull said if all goes well with these three, other homes will follow next week.

    "We've received enormous support from friends and families saying that it is time."

    Dozens of drivers have taken part in a "car meet" which saw some vehicles being raced around roads in Tamworth, Staffordshire Police said. , external

    Several residents had called police about the gathering on Glascote Road, Marlborough Way and surrounding areas last night which saw about 50 vehicles involved.

    The force hasn't revealed if anyone was arrested but said the town's covered by a Public Spaces Protection Order which allows officers to stop car cruising and could see offenders fined or prosecuted.

    • A balloon carnival will not go ahead this year in any form after proposals for a smaller scale event due to the pandemic were scrapped. Oswestry Town Council dismissed an idea to pay £7,000 for four balloons to fly over the area for people to watch from their homes after the larger event was cancelled.

    • A new boxing gym has been given permission to open for a two year "probationary" period at a former garage premises in Shrewsbury. Shropshire Councillors said they understood residents' concerns over potential noise from the new facility on Monkmoor Trading Estate and gave temporary permission to allow the impact to be assessed before a permanent change of use could be sought.
    • A summer coach trip for elderly residents to Wales has been abandoned over concerns about coronavirus safety, the availability of toilets and the possibility of infecting the locals. St Georges and Priorslee Parish Council decided not to hold its annual outing to Llandudno in August and instead redirect the funds towards a planned trip in November to Chester.

    It's officially the hottest day of the year so far, with a temperature of 33.3C recorded at Heathrow Airport.

    Parts of the Midlands reached 30C and it's set to be another hot and sticky evening, with temperatures remaining in the 20s for much of the night.

    But prepare to say goodbye to the sun for a few days with a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in place from midday on Friday until 09:00 on Saturday.
