    A controlled explosion was carried out in a Birmingham park after a hand grenade was found in city canal.

    West Midlands Police's Force Response team tweeted that the grenade was found by fisherman in the Grand Union Canal near the Ackers Adventure Centre in Sparkbrook on Sunday.

    It was moved to the Heybarnes Recreation Ground in nearby Small Heath where a controlled explosion was carried out by the Royal Logistic Corps' bomb disposal team.

  2. Fire causes school collapsepublished at 08:54 British Summer Time 6 July 2020

    A fire at a derelict school in Dudley caused it to partially collapse.

    About 30 firefighters were called to deal with the blaze at Blowers Green School which started in the early hours of Sunday.

    The fire service worked with the council and gas and electricity companies to make the area safe.

    Inquiries have begun to find out how the fire started.

  3. Ian Paterson: Inquests into 'unnatural deaths'published at 08:31 British Summer Time 6 July 2020

    Inquests will be opened in Birmingham later after a review found patients of a rogue breast surgeon may have died unnaturally.

    Consultant Ian Paterson, 62, was convicted in 2017 of 17 counts of wounding with intent and three counts of unlawful wounding.

    He was initially jailed for 15 years, before the Court of Appeal increased his sentence to a 20-year term.

    The Birmingham and Solihull coroner, who has been looking at a "random selection" of cases involving Paterson said she and the area coroner now "believe there is evidence to have reason to suspect that some of those deaths may be unnatural".
