The policing watchdog for England and Wales is launching a review of cases where race discrimination may have been a factor.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating a series of incidents in Birmingham, London and Greater Manchester, in which it's alleged excessive force was used against black people.
The IOPC is also looking into claims of racial profiling after the athlete Bianca Williams and her partner, who are both black, were handcuffed and searched by police during a vehicle stop.
The director general of the watchdog, Michael Lockwood, says cases where race discrimination may have played a part are now to become a “focus” of its work.
The organisation will also examine how officers treat ethnic minority victims of crime and if race hate offences are taken seriously enough.
