    Up to £1.5m could be spent by Shropshire Council to provide homes for homeless people.

    The local authority said it was paying for more than 70 families staying in bed and breakfast accommodation, at a cost of £941,000, after government grants were taken into account.

    The council plans to work with housing associations to provide temporary homes, to reduce the annual bill to £116,000.

    It is proposed that the £1.5m, plus the stamp duty and VAT, should come from money paid by housing developers under section 106 agreements.

    The plans will be discussed by councillors next Thursday.

    Three Shrewsbury shopping centres bought by Shropshire Council for £51m two years ago are now believed to be worth just £17m.

    It's another big drop in the value of the Pride Hill, Charles Darwin and Riverside centres, which were believed to be worth £40m last March.

    The council bought the three shopping centres believing they would bring in revenue and allow it to transform the look of the town centre.

    The food at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt hospital has been voted the best in the country for the 14th time in 15 years.

    The Care Quality Commission surveyed 77,000 patients, external from 144 NHS trusts between August 2019 and the start of 2020 and asked them to give a score out of 10 for the food.

    The Gobowen orthopaedic hospital got a score of 7.9 out of 10.

    The hospital also scored 9.6 out of 10 for the choice of food on offer.

    The government needs to "step up and continue doing more", the chief executive of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce has said.

    Paul Faulkner was reacting to the news that Birmingham's John Lewis department store is going to close and he said that while the government's latest funding announcement yesterday was welcome, it hadn't gone far enough.

    That is despite a letter from the head of HM Revenue and Customs questioning whether the chancellor's multibillion-pound measures were value for money for taxpayers.

    A new wood is going to be created on land near Evesham, with 100,000 trees.

    The Woodland Trust is working with Worcestershire County Council on the project, which will see a 150,000 trees planted in the county over the next five years.

    The decision to close the John Lewis store in Birmingham's Grand Central shopping centre, one of the retailer's flagship stores, has "disappointed" the centre management.

    The store was opened in 2015 and was a key part of the regeneration of the new Street Station complex and attracts more than 20 million visitors a year, the centre said.

    Bullring and Grand Central owner Hammerson said it would continue to have discussions with John Lewis "as there remains a significant period left on the lease".

    But it said the site was in a busy part of the city centre and "lends itself to future alternative uses, which we will explore”.

  19. Covid-19 cases double in Rugby as lockdown easespublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 9 July 2020

    The number of coronavirus cases in Rugby has doubled in the past week as lockdown measures are eased.

    The local authority said the number of cases increased from 3.7 per 100,000 people last week, to 7.5.

    "While the number of cases is still low, the increase is the 25th largest nationwide," the council said, with leader Councillor Seb Lowe adding the rise in cases was "concerning".

    "I would urge every resident to take precautions and do what is right for Rugby," he said, urging people to wear face masks and maintain a 2m distance from others.
