    It is "still scary times" for the restaurant business despite lockdown easing, a Michelin-starred chef's said.

    Aktar Islam is chef director for Opheem and Pulperia in Birmingham and said, despite being allowed to reopen earlier this month, takings have been down 40% compared with what he's used to seeing.

    He told the weekly West Midlands Covid-19 briefing there was clear demand for eating out, but working at a reduced capacity and doing just one sitting had led to a "massive drop" in income with costs still at 100%.

    Mr Islam said he'd been able to put money into his business to keep it going but "there are others sadly not in that position, not to have that luxury to dip into savings or investments".

    A family-run hotel has announced it will not be reopening after the lockdown due to the pandemic.

    The Tollgate Hotel and Leisure had been in business in Stoke-on-Trent for more than 40 years. , external

    The owners, the Oldfield family, said on their Facebook page, external: "These are very sad times for the family and for many others hit by the Covid crisis."

    They added if people had any items left on the premises which they wanted back to get in contact.

    Images have been released of bungalows that officials hope will save a listed church in Bilston from closure.

    St Mary the Virgin Church, in Gorge Road, Hurst Hill, needs to raise thousands of pounds for repairs and to safeguard the future of the Grade II listed building.

    A planning application has been submitted to the City of Wolverhampton Council seeking permission to demolish its now derelict, vandal-hit hall and build two bungalows in its place.

    Once permission is secured, the church plans to sell the land to a developer as it looks to raise almost £300,000 for much needed new facilities.

    One hundred members of staff at a large poultry producer have tested positive for coronavirus over the last four months, the firm's confirmed.

    Avara Foods operates nine sites in England with four in the West Midlands , external- two in Hereford as well Brierley Hill and Telford - and said the cases were spread around different sites and out of a total of 2,500 employees.

    It added there had been just one positive test in the past month and they had seen a steady decline in Covid-19-related absences.

    The company, which supplies supermarkets and fast food chains with chicken and turkey, said it had made more changes to keep staff safe and was operating its own track and trace system.

    Several meat processing plants and abattoirs have seen hundreds of workers test positive for coronavirus in the past few months and BBC News looked into why.

    The reasons range from cold, damp factories being "perfect environments" for the virus to linger and spread to staff having to talk more loudly due to noisy machinery which could aid the spread of infected droplets.

    The West Midlands Mayor Andy Street is to meet with the head of John Lewis as part of efforts to stop the closure of the retail giant's Birmingham department store.

    John Lewis announced last week it was closing eight stores permanently including its branch at Birmingham's Grand Central shopping centre and a smaller outlet in Tamworth.

    Mr Street has described the decision by John Lewis as "incredibly disappointing news" and that it risks being "a dreadful mistake" by the firm.

    Mr Street is himself a former managing director of John Lewis and says he will be meeting with the company chairman for talks on Tuesday.

    The 46-year-old suffered several deep cuts to his torso in the attack yesterday evening on Main Road, Kempsey, Worcestershire.

    Officers said a 17-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of robbery and causing grievous bodily harm.

    Three others, a 34-year-old man and two women, aged 29 and 18, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and remain in custody.

    At least 28 of the workers who have tested positive for coronavirus on a farm which went into lockdown are from Romania, the country's foreign ministry has confirmed.

    Vegetable producers A S Green and Co in Herefordshire ordered crop-pickers to self-isolate after 74 initially tested positive which then rose to 93.

    Romania's Foreign Ministry said, external its nationals were asymptomatic, in good health, and were being monitored daily by Public Health England officials.

    The Romanian Embassy in London said it was ready to provide consular assistance.

    Warwickshire's Dom Sibley celebrated his second Test century this morning as he and Ben Stokes batted throughout the morning session without losing a wicket.

    The pair had resumed at 207-3 and Sibley reached his landmark just before lunch while his partner Stokes was left 99 not out.

    According to Test Match Special statistician Andy Zaltzman, his century came from 312 balls and is the third slowest England century of the millenium so far after two by Michael Atherton in 2000.

    All Cadbury chocolate bars sold in multipacks will shrink by the end of 2021 to reduce their calorie count, owner Mondelez has announced.

    However, prices are unlikely to drop.

    Many of the firm's best-known brands are produced at its plant in Bornville.

    Popular treats including Crunchie, Twirl and Wispa bars will contain no more than 200 calories each when sold in a four-pack, Mondelez said.

    A spokesperson confirmed that the list price for multipacks would not change and said pricing was up to retailers.

    Chocolate fans took to Twitter, external to denounce the latest example of what has become known as "shrinkflation".

    Shropshire Council has pledged to reduce its reliance on B&B placements for homeless people by spending £1.5m on houses to use as temporary accommodation.

    The scheme, which involves the council taking out long-term leases with private landlords, was signed off by councillors at a meeting on Thursday.

    It is hoped the move will also cut the number of households the council is forced to put up in guest houses, currently around 70, due to a lack of alternative housing options.

    There are ambitions for the initiative to be expanded in the future if proven successful.
