    Coventry's City of Culture Trust has been given a further £500,000.

    Its year as UK City of Culture has been pushed back to start in May 2021, due to the coronavirus crisis.

    The latest grant has been made by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, external, which supports the arts.

    The funding will go towards ensuring the "cultural sector activity makes a significant contribution to economic, environmental, social and health and wellbeing targets for the city," the charity said.

    A woman's been attacked by a man who drove his car into her at a supermarket car park, police said, external.

    The assault happened on Tuesday evening at the Lidl in Hadley, Telford, and the man was known to the victim, officers added.

    After hitting her hip, police said he then dragged her into the car while still assaulting her.

  3. Theft of boy's honesty shop inspires hospice fundraiserpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time 17 July 2020

    A five-year-old boy who was helping run an honesty shop and had thieves steal his supplies and money has raised more than £4,500 for a children's hospice.

    Harry Clare sells eggs, goats milk and soap among other items at Rosebud Meadow glamping site in Malvern, Worcestershire.

    The family noticed on Tuesday morning money and supplies had been stolen.

    After receiving hundreds of messages of support, his mother Rosie Clare, external set up a fundraising page for Acorns Children's Hospice with a target of £6,000 as her son said he wanted "to make other children happy again too".

    She added the family had been "truly overwhelmed" by the love they'd had since the theft.

    Children from a West Midlands academy group are part of a video telling their story about lockdown.

    Pupils from REAch2 Primary Academy Schools in Wolverhampton, Cannock, Telford and Staffordshire have taken part in the Arts Insight project A Sense of Lockdown.

    The video, released today, features Year Six students from the six schools telling their story of lockdown experiences.

    "This project gives the children a meaningful and purposeful way of recovering, whilst giving them a platform to talk so adults can listen and act if needed."

    A man's suffered serious injuries after his car came off a road and ended up on its roof in a field.

    The crash happened just after midnight near High Street, Leintwardine, Herefordshire, the ambulance service said. , external

    The car had suffered "significant damage", it said, and fire crews cut the man free before he was taken to hospital.

    Aston Villa will probably have to win their last two matches against Arsenal and West Ham if they are to survive in the Premier League, says boss Dean Smith.

    Villa were denied a crucial away win at Everton when substitute Theo Walcott headed an 87th-minute equaliser to cancel out Ezri Konsa's goal.

    Smith's side are three points from safety, with a home game against Arsenal next Tuesday followed by an away match at fellow strugglers West Ham on the final day of the Premier League season on 26 July to come.

    "It looks that way," said Smith after being asked whether they now needed two victories.

    Approval has been given for a new 496-room student block in Coventry.

    Applicant Vita Student said its purpose-built student block towards the edge of the ring road on Warwick Road responds to an “unmet need” in the city and will cater for students with higher disposal incomes, particularly those attending the University of Warwick.

    The scheme spans 15,837 sqm and consists of 496 ‘studio apartments’ across one 12-storey block and a second 14-storey block.

    Three courtyard gardens have been incorporated within the plans, while it will also includes communal study, fitness and social areas, a breakfast canteen and 102 cycle storage bays.

    A man has died after being hit by a car in West Bromwich.

    The pedestrian died at the scene at the junction of Newton Road and Wigmore Lane shortly before 21:30 on Thursday, said the ambulance service.

    The driver of the grey Audi A7 stopped at the scene and is assisting officers in their investigation.
