    A tweet by the BBC Archive looking back at Birmingham's bid to host the Olympic Games in 1992 has been deleted after dozens of angry responses on Twitter.

    The tone of the message about the country's second city saw politicians weighing in with Walsall MP Eddie Hughes labelling , externalit "patronising" and West Midlands mayor Andy Street saying, external "we could really do without these silly digs".

    Other Twitter users branded it as "typical metropolitan bias, external" and "shameful, smug and embarrassing, external".

    The BBC Archive team deleted the tweet and admitted "the tone wasn't right":

  2. Stab victim planning fundraising walk for air ambulancepublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 15 July 2020

    A woman who was stabbed 24 times by her former partner, is going to walk from RAF Cosford to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, to raise money for the Midland Air Ambulance.

    Natalie Queiroz will stop off at the scene of the attack, in Sutton Coldfield, and has chosen the route to replicate the journey that the Midlands Air Ambulance RAF Cosford aircraft made on the day.

    She was eight months pregnant when she was knifed by former partner Babur Karamat Raja in March 2016.

    He was jailed for 18 years.

  3. Police issue 43 lockdown fines in three monthspublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 15 July 2020

    Police in Staffordshire issued 43 fines in just over three months for alleged breaches of coronavirus lockdown rules, according to new figures.

    The data from the National Police Chiefs’ Council showed the force handed out one of the lowest levels of fines in the country between 27 March and 6 July.

    By comparison, three forces including Metropolitan Police issued more than 1,000 fines in the same period.

    Staffordshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis said his officers had relied on educating people over issuing penalties.

    "The cajoling, the advising and the encouragement to act appropriately during this difficult time has been very successful," he said.

    This year's Great Birmingham Run's been cancelled with organisers saying , externalthe pandemic left them "no option" to hold the event on any date this year.

    Runners who were due to take part on 11 October can either get a refund or roll their place over to 2021's run.

    A bingo firm's going to permanently shut 26 of its halls putting 537 jobs at risk.

    The move by Buzz Bingo will see six sites in the West Midlands close as part of a restructuring deal.

    The six are:

    • Hereford
    • Stockland Green, Birmingham
    • Tamworth
    • Wednesbury
    • Wolverhampton
    • Worcester

    Buzz Bingo said 91 of its clubs would keep trading under plans to start reopening them from 6 August.

    The plan still has to be approved by creditors at a meeting on 3 August.

    The family of a Telford girl with a rare form of epilepsy say her treatment is working, after fundraising to get her access to a cannabis-based treatment.

    Sienna Richardson was diagnosed with Landau Kleffner syndrome , externalafter showing problems with her communication skills. If untreated, she could have been left with permanent speech and language difficulties, her family said.

    They launched a fundraising campaign to get her access to Bedrolite which they said would offer her the best outcome, after being told it is was unavailable to them on the NHS.

    Despite calling off their campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic, they were able to secure her a private prescription for the drug.

    Her mother, Lucy Richardson, said latest test results showed the medication was "working".

    Despite a law change to allow the prescription of cannabis-based medications, some families have been unable to secure it on the NHS.

    Mrs Richardson said they would now "join the fight with other parents around the country" to make prescriptions for Bedrolite more widely available.

    A heavily pregnant woman and a man have been attacked after confronting a stranger over dropping litter.

    The pair were outside a takeaway on Crewe Road, Alsager, on Sunday night when the man assaulted them, Cheshire Police said., external

    He punched the woman in the head and then punched her in the stomach after she told him she was pregnant.

    Officers said the man walked off towards the town centre after the attack.

    The male victim suffered a serious injury to his face while the woman had minor injuries and both have since been discharged from hospital.

    Policing the wearing of face masks in shops will be "quite a nightmare", according to one shop owner in the Black Country.

    Face coverings in stores in England will become mandatory on 24 July.

    Nici Patchett runs Withit Witch, a knitting and craft store in Halesowen, and said most of her customers already wear masks.

    But she told BBC WM she doesn't feel she can confront someone who doesn't: "Regarding the policing of it, I think that will be quite a nightmare, I really do."

    Severn Valley Railway is being given £250,000 by the National Lottery, to help it cope with the loss of income during the coronavirus lockdown.

    The heritage railway is due to reopen on 1 August, but estimates it will make a loss of up to £6m this year.

    The railway has also raised £750,000 through an appeal and said the lottery money would be used to pay its staff.

    People are being urged not to ring up their GP to try and get an exemption from wearing a face mask in shops and supermarkets.

    Wearing the coverings will become mandatory from 24 July in England and those who fail to comply will face a fine of up to £100, the government has announced.

    On its Facebook page, Belgrave Medical Centre,, external based in Dresden, Stoke-on-Trent, said since the announcement surgeries had seen a surge in patients phoning asking for an exemption letter.

    The post added: "We are NOT allowed to do this."

    Children under 11 and those with certain disabilities will be exempt with the government expected to publish a full list of exemptions in the future.

    Aerial photographs of the Worcestershire village of Kempsey, could help an investigation into the discovery of human remains there.

    It has been 12 months since maintenance workers found the bones of a woman in a septic tank at a property in Bestman's Lane and West Mercia Police wants to compare how the site looked now and in the past.

    West Brom, in second, are four points above third-placed Brentford having played a game more.

    Bilic said after the match he was pleased with how his side played and their defensive work.

    "We just couldn't score but the composure, mentality, passion and quality made me really proud. It would be better if we had won the game of course but it's one game less to go and it's in our hands."
