    A fallen tree's caused about £80,000 worth of damage to a fun park in Warwickshire, its owner's said.

    The tree came down on Tuesday night at St Nicholas Park, Warwick, and smashed through several pieces of equipment.

    Jay Wheatley is company director of owner Green Space Leisure and says the company is hoping to reopen early next week.

    "We're devastated, particularly with it being in the summer holidays and particularly this year after all we've suffered with Covid as many have."

    The two-day event will see gardening and cookery demonstrations online and the best of last year's entertainment.

    Organisers say they "very much hope" they can return to their usual home of the Quarry next year.

    A pub in Staffordshire has closed after one of its staff came in contact with a person who tested positive for Covid-19.

    The Red House in Caverswall, near Stoke-on-Trent, said on Facebook , externalit had temporarily shut as a precaution so all staff could be tested.

    The pub added it was likely to stay closed for the rest of the weekend.

    Soil dug up from a canal as part of a restoration scheme is being used to try to stop future illegal traveller camps in part of Lichfield.

    The city council said, external it was making the move after a recent unauthorised encampment at Netherstowe.

    The authority, with the Lichfield & Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust, is moving to the site 150 tonnes of soil, dug up from the former canal on Tamworth Road.

    The soil's being formed into a mound to stop vehicles coming back and will be planted with wildflowers, with bollards added.

    Demand for food parcels from a food bank has nearly trebled in a year, its manager has revealed.

    Staff at the Stratford-upon-Avon facility handed out 692 parcels in July which manager Marian Homer said was almost three times the number in July 2019.

    She added demand for children's parcels had also risen from 76 in July 2019 to 378 last month.

    “No parent wants to depend on charity to feed their children but it’s clear that our food bank is becoming the only option for a growing number of struggling families."

    "Failing leadership" at two troubled hospitals is "perpetuating poor care," the chief inspector of hospitals has said.

    Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust has been in special measures since November 2018. Since then further concerns have come to light.

    More services have been downgraded and "further serious concerns" identified.

    SaTH said it was taking "immediate action" to improve performance and delivery of care.

    There is about five miles of slow moving traffic approaching the area and motorists are being warned to add an extra half an hour to their journey time.

    The dig last year

    A dig last year found evidence of a presence on the site before the Norman invasion of 1066.

    A team will excavate a trench on the grassed slope of the western rampart under social distancing guidelines.

    The council said visitors will be able to see the team working and ask questions, from a safe distance.

    The dig is expected to start at the beginning of September.

    As anger grows over the A-level grades awarded today, a Coventry head teacher has been highly critical of the way teachers' assessments have been altered.

    Exam boards asked schools to predict the grades pupils would have achieved if they had sat exams.

    While nationally, 40% of grades are lower than teachers' predictions, Clare Turpin from Sidney Stringer Academy says 60% of her pupils' grades have been marked down.

    "They haven't really used the calculated grades that teachers have submitted." Clare's told BBC CWR this afternoon. "In maths alone, as an example, 28 out of the 29 calculated grades have been reduced."

    She added: "Last year 88 of our pupils achieved A* to B [in maths]. We calculated this year it would be 86% and they awarded us 44%, so it just doesn't make any sense."
