  16. Government badger cull 'could double'published at 17:40 British Summer Time 17 August 2020

    BBC News

Badger culling could double this year despite claims it would be phased out and replaced with a cattle vaccine, according to campaigners who say they have seen a leaked document.

    BadgerImage source, PA Media

In March, Defra announced vaccine trials in a bid to tackle bovine TB.

Last year, about 35,000 badgers were killed but the Badger Trust said a leaked document showed plans to cull up to about 64,500 this year.

Defra said it had not granted any cull licences this year.

The chief executive of the Badger Trust, Dominic Dyer, said the document, which the BBC has seen, was "definitely accurate, definitely authentic - I have seen these types of documents before".

It mentions Staffordshire, Herefordshire, and Warwickshire among other areas, with authorisation dates set from 1 September.

Defra said it did not comment on leaked documents and has not yet responded to a BBC request about whether it was currently considering any cull licences.

A Coventry student has described a government U-turn on how A-level grades are awarded as a "weight off my shoulders".

A-level and GCSE students in England will be given grades estimated by their teachers, rather than by an algorithm, it has been announced.

Zara from Bishop Ullathorne School in the city said: "I have been feeling so heavy and miserable and angry these last couple of days.

"I was predicted A*AA and was given A*AB and that one grade meant that I couldn't go to any medical school.

"I understand though that my university does have a set amount of spaces and that they might not have enough space for me, so if I have to defer for a year I will."
