    There are now 17 cases of Covid-19 known to be linked to a bingo night in Newcastle-under-Lyme last month.

    Staffordshire County Council said more than 1,000 people took a test over the weekend, after the outbreak linked to Silverdale Working Men's Club.

    The council has produced a list of 12 other pubs, clubs and restaurants, external where those 17 people visited following the event on 16 August and is urging anyone who visited them to get a test.

  2. Man bailed after suspected chemical attackpublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 1 September 2020

    A man who was arrested following a suspected chemical attack in Ross-on-Wye has been bailed.

    He arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after reports a man was injured when a chemical substance was thrown at him on Thursday.

    The suspect, who is in his 50s, has to return to Hereford police station on 18 September.

    The Stoke City striker Benik Afobe has been told he is part of manager Michael O'Neill's plans for the coming season.

    After a season on loan at Bristol City which was largely lost to injury, O'Neill said he hoped Afobe would see it as "the right place for him to really kick-start his career again."

    The Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross, who also missed time through injury last season, is starting in this afternoon's friendly at home to Leeds.

  6. Boy in hospital after being hit by vanpublished at 12:49 British Summer Time 1 September 2020

    A nine-year-old boy is in hospital after being hit by a van at Rugeley bus station yesterday afternoon.

    Staffordshire Police said the boy, who is from the town, suffered leg injuries and is in a "stable condition" at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

    The collision happened on Elmore Lane at 14:20 and the 57-year-old driver of the van and his 60-year-old female passenger were unhurt.

  7. Tributes to former BBC sports presenterpublished at 12:32 British Summer Time 1 September 2020

    Tributes have been paid to the former Midlands Today sports presenter Steve Lee, who has died at the age of 68.

    He covered events like Aston Villa's European campaigns and Coventry City's FA Cup final win in 1987, before moving on to Sky Sports later in his career.

    Nick Owen paid tribute, tweeting: "Shattering news about former BBC colleague Steve Lee. Always seemed so fit, yet he’s gone. Can’t believe it. First class sports broadcaster and always good company."

    And Warwickshire Cricket Club added: "Steve was a close friend of the Club who covered the Bears for many years."

    Stoke City said he was a "consummate professional and a familiar face to TV viewers in the Midlands".

    And Jeff Stelling from Sky Sports said he was "a lovely man who I would chat with often after Soccer Saturday".

    A factory in Telford has been given permission to set up four acres of solar panels on nearby land.

    Ricoh UK said the measure would save 521 tonnes of carbon emissions every year and would generate power equivalent to the amount used by 281 homes in a year.

    Whitchurch Alport have been given permission to double the capacity of their ground to 300 for tonight's FA Cup match against Haughmond.

    Until the weekend the Shropshire club been limited to 150 by the FA for social distancing reasons, but passed the conditions to extend that.

    Firefighters are still tackling a large barn fire outside Stone, Staffordshire, which broke out yesterday.

    Crews have been working to move about 70 tonnes of hay out of the barn on Knenhall Road at Moddershall.

  12. Eight Asda staff test positive for Covid-19published at 09:30 British Summer Time 1 September 2020

    Eight workers at an Asda supermarket in Smethwick have tested positive for coronavirus.

    The store in Cape Hill is staying open and Asda says no delivery drivers have been affected.

    The eight employees have gone into isolation, with extra cleaning being carried out at the premises.

    Sandwell Council said the infection rate in Smethwick remained high.

  14. Man dies in motorway crashpublished at 09:00 British Summer Time 1 September 2020

    A man in his 30s died in a crash yesterday morning which closed the M50 in one direction for most of the day.

    West Mercia Police said it happened at 00:20 near Ledbury.

    The eastbound side of the motorway was closed for more than 12 hours between Ledbury and Tewkesbury.

  15. Cash-blow for theatre as pantomime called offpublished at 08:45 British Summer Time 1 September 2020

    This year's pantomime production of Beauty and the Beast at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn won't be going ahead.

    The decision was taken because of uncertainty around the lockdown restrictions for theatres later this year.
