    Disused land in Brownhills is going to be improved with market stalls, benches, a children's play area and space for a Christmas tree.

    It's part of a plan to enhance the High Street area, which lost its regular market.

    Last year, Walsall Council granted permission for developers Lightquote Limited to demolish the Ravens Court shopping centre and build two retail units and a gym on the site.

    Concerns had been raised by councillors on the planning committee about the loss of public space and the ward councillor, Ken Ferguson, said he hoped these plans would make up for that.

    The leader of Coventry City Council has said he has no sympathy if students who held a party in their halls are kicked off their courses.

    About 200 are thought to have been at the gathering in the privately run Arundel House in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

    A robber has forced his way into the home of an elderly lady in Wolverhampton, stealing cash, bank cards and pulling a ring off her finger.

    The man, who is believed to be in his 20s, barged his way in sometime around 17:30 and pushed her into a chair after she tried to fend him off with a walking stick.

    West Midlands Police called the attack "despicable" and believes he chose the home because he knew a vulnerable woman lived there.

    This ewe and her lamb have been rescued after being found neck-deep in mud.

    The RSPCA said they were discovered at Hanbury Woodend, near Burton-upon-Trent on Monday and could have been stuck there for up to 48 hours.

    Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service helped pull the animals free and while the mother survived, the lamb was too badly injured and had to be put to sleep.

    Stoke City manager Michael O'Neill has said it's hard to predict further departures ahead of transfer deadline day on Monday.

    O'Neill said the club was making it easy for players to leave if they want to, but added: "Players have contracts, they have salaries and obviously players don't leave unless the circumstances are right for them."

    Two men have been found shot dead in a car on a Black Country industrial estate.

    West Midlands Police said the pair hadn't yet been formally identified, but they were discovered parked outside units on Moor Street in Brierley Hill at 15:30 yesterday.

    The force believes they were killed shortly after 13:00 and the site has been sealed off.

    Birmingham City have been knocked out of the Women's FA Cup after losing 3-0 to Everton last night.

    Northern Ireland forward Simone Magill lashed in just before half-time and Denmark's Nicoline Sorensen doubled the visitors' lead after the break.

    Birmingham, who won the cup in 2012 and had hoped to reach their third final, appeared low on energy after battling past Brighton on penalties after extra time on Sunday.

    Everton will face either holders Manchester City or 14-time winners Arsenal at Wembley on 1 November.

    An electric ambulance has gone into service for West Midlands Ambulance Service for the first time.

    It said it would be the UK's first all-electric emergency ambulance and would be used to test the technology, with the aim of eventually introducing an emission-free fleet.

    WMAS Chief Executive Anthony Marsh, said: “Given Birmingham is introducing a clean air zone, this is a sensible and advantageous step forward for so many reasons.”

    The ambulance can travel at 75 mph and go up to 110 miles before needing to recharge.

  11. Bomb disposal experts called after body foundpublished at 09:19 British Summer Time 1 October 2020

    A bomb disposal team was called out yesterday afternoon after a man's body was found at a flat in Burslem.

    They were asked to attend as a precaution because an unknown substance was found at Manchester Court on Federation Road.

    The man's death is being treated as unexplained.

    One of the main routes through Ironbridge is going to reopen to vehicles at the weekends.

    A patient with coronavirus has died at a site run by the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust.

    It's the first Covid 19-related death to be recorded since the start of August at the trust, which runs the Royal Stoke and County hospitals.

    The number of deaths in hospitals in North and Mid Staffordshire linked to the virus is 374.
