    More surge testing was announced on Friday in the Highgate and Bordesley ward, including Digbeth, after a confirmed case was discovered.

    The move followed recent testing in the Birmingham and Sandwell areas.

    The city council said on Monday no connection had been found between the cases and there was no evidence of any spreading of the variant in local communities.

    One man was arrested and fliers and promotional material for gatherings were seized, West Midlands Police said, external.

    The 21-year-old was detained at a house in Bartley Green on suspicion of conspiracy to commit public nuisance.

    The force said it had targeted homes in Handsworth, Kings Norton and Stourbridge as part of efforts to stop the arranging and promotion on social media of car cruise gatherings.

    Drivers are being warned of difficult driving conditions on the M54 in Shropshire due to smoke from a large recycling fire.

    The blaze at the waste firm on Rock Road, Ketley in Telford has sent a large plume of smoke into the sky over the town.

    Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze involved several bales of waste plastics.

    The parents of a teenager who was shot in what they believe was a case of mistaken identity are calling for an end to gang violence.

    Adriano Shakes, from Oldbury, a head boy at his school, was shot in the arm at a bus stop close to Birmingham's Utilita Arena on 13 April, despite having no connection to gangs.

    His family believe the 16-year-old, who is recovering, was targeted because his attackers mistook him for someone from a rival postcode area.

    His mother, Moya Fortella (pictured), said: "By the grace of God he is alive and I am thankful for that but now it is turning to anger and I think something should be done."

    West Midlands Police has appealed for information into what happened. No arrests have been made.
