    A 27-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after one man was shot and another stabbed.

    A 33-year-old man needed surgery to remove pellets from his face and leg having been fired at with a shotgun in Dunlin Close, Erdington, on 7 May.

    A 27-year-old man also suffered a serious slash wound to his arm.

    “We believe the incident is gang related and we’ve launched an investigation to find the people responsible," Det Insp Gemma Currie said.

    "It’s totally unacceptable for a firearm to be discharged in a residential street and we could easily have been looking at a murder in this case."

  2. Council set to invest £3.25m on regenerationpublished at 09:51 British Summer Time 12 May 2021

    Stoke-on-Trent City Council is set to invest a further £3.25m to regenerate part of the city centre.

    Meigh Street car park will be demolished as will the adjoining Goodson building.

    "This site is the single, largest regeneration opportunity in council ownership which we have power over, and we want to make sure that whatever we do on the site connects and benefits the whole city, and isn’t just about he city centre.

    "This additional funding is absolutely vital to make sure the site’s full potential can be unlocked and make sure we get the best outcome for Stoke-on-Trent through its regeneration."

    In its 10-15 year vision for the site, the council has said it wants to include a "transport hub" in the site's redevelopment, which would connect it by ultra-light rail trams to other parts of the city, designed to improve air quality.

    The money is subject to agreement from the council's cabinet.

  3. Memorial to the Cheshires to be builtpublished at 09:33 British Summer Time 12 May 2021

    A new monument is to be built at the National Memorial Arboretum, to remember soldiers of the Cheshire Regiment.

    The approval, from the arboretum at Alrewas, came after more than £38,000 was raised through a fundraising campaign led by two former servicemen.

    The regiment was formed in 1689 but was merged into the Mercian Regiment 14 years ago.

  4. Human remains find 'not suspicious'published at 08:45 British Summer Time 12 May 2021

    Human remains found near an HS2 station development in Birmingham are not being treated as suspicious, police said.

    Park Street, near the Curzon Street Station site,was closed on Monday after the remains were found under a pavement.

    At the time, West Midlands Police said the remains were thought to have been at the site for some time and they later confirmed there were not believed to be suspicous circumstances around the death.

    Today will see patchy cloud and scattered showers throughout.

    Showers may turn locally heavy, but there will be plenty of sunshine in between, particularly in the afternoon. Highs of 12C to 15C (54F to 59F).

    Tonight showers will clear, but cloud will build in and it will become overcast. A few outbreaks of rain may push in during the early hours of Thursday. Lows of 8C to 11C (46F to 52F).

    Traffic on the M6 southbound between Spaghetti Junction and Castle Bromwich has been temporarily stopped due to a collision, Highways England says.

    Traffic officers are currently at the scene, but drivers are being warned about long delays and to avoid the area if they can.

    Speedway will return to Monmore Green next week after pausing in 2020 due to the pandemic.

    Owner Chris Van Straaten told the Express and Star newspaper in September that 2020 had been "stolen" by the coronavirus pandemic , externalafter scrapping plans to host any more races.

    But, the club is welcoming it restarting again from Monday.

  16. Police dog injured during house searchpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 11 May 2021

    A police dog has been injured during a search of a property in Hanley yesterday.

    Basti, a three-and-a-half year-old German Shepherd, was working alongside firearms officers at the house on Rushton Road, searching for suspects.

    During the search he jumped through an open window on to another roof and slid down to the ground below.

    Basti was checked over by vets and did not suffer any injuries, but has been given time off to rest and recover.

    The force said the searches were carried out following an incident in Waterloo Road on 9 May.

    A 35-year-old man from the local area has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody.
