  3. New boundary shake-up proposals 'a nonsense'published at 16:48 British Summer Time 8 June 2021

Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant says proposals to redraw and rename some parliamentary seats by The Boundary Commission for England show "no knowledge" of his constituency.

Under the plans, Lichfield Trent Valley Station will be cut in two and the eastern edge of Lichfield will be "cut off", the Conservative MP says.

Other parts of the Midlands and the north of England will lose seats while areas in the South gain under a shake-up of England's electoral map in 2023.

Population changes mean that, in England, the North East, the North West and the West Midlands will lose two seats each while London gains two, the South West gets three extra and the South East is up seven.

It would be the first major overhaul of seat boundaries in England since 2010.

But Mr Fabricant described the proposals as "a nonsense".

"It bears all the hallmarks of boundaries drawn in the 19th and 20th centuries by Whitehall mapmakers in days of empire without any knowledge or care of the regions and people concerned."
