    A campaign to build a national memorial paying tribute to miners has reached its £100,000 target.

    Chase Arts for Public Spaces (Chaps) has been raising money for the monument at the National Memorial Arboretum.

    The group announced on Facebook, external it had reached the target and thanked supporters for their donations.

    Work has already begun on the memorial as the group announced in February it had had £92,000 donated.

    Dean Richardson won a by-election for the Penkhull and Stoke Ward and the result gives the Tories 22 of the 44 seats on the local authority.

    Turnout was just under 31% with 1,435 votes cast, the city council said. , external

    Labour finished in second, 10 votes behind, and group leader Jane Ashworth told BBC Radio Stoke she was not too disheartened because the Tories "didn’t wipe the floor".

    The by-election was called after independent councillor Randy Conteh resigned.

  5. 'Dangerous' scrapyards raided in Wolverhamptonpublished at 17:34 British Summer Time 2 July 2021

    Several scrapyards have been raided in Wolverhampton, uncovering a number of offences allegedly being committed at the sites, council officials say.

    Stolen engines, discarded fridges and freezers releasing gas were found, as well as businesses operating without permits at a large unit on Bilston Industrial Estate.

    The premises were targeted after concerns were raised about a wide number of problems and the joint operation included representatives from The Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, immigration services, British Red Cross and the city’s Refugee and Migrant Centre, to offer support if required.

    Further investigations are now being carried out with different organisations taking responsibility for the different issues, the council says.

    Stafford Borough Council has approved spending the money to transform the north end of the town centre.

    A report to the authority , externalsaid a combination of the 2008 recession, the changing behaviours of shoppers, internet retail and the Covid-19 pandemic had resulted in a "risk of ongoing decline".

    The plan for the money includes increasing the number of people living in Stafford to support retail and hospitality sectors.

    There will also be new pedestrian routes, "enhanced spaces" for socialising and the council said the indoor market could be moved and redesigned to improve footfall.

    A 47-year-old man from Rugby has been charged with assaulting four police officers.

    It follows an incident in the town on Monday night, Warwickshire Police says.

    The accused, also charged with dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking without consent, was remanded in custody. He is due to appear at Warwick Crown Court later this month.

  14. Man injured after car goes down embankmentpublished at 14:59 British Summer Time 2 July 2021

    A man was injured when his car left the road and went down an embankment.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called at about 21:30 on Thursday to the junction of the A458 and Ludlow Road in Bridgnorth, where the car had hit street furniture before leaving the road.

    A spokesperson said crews found the car had travelled about 15 metres down the embankment, with the driver still trapped in the vehicle.

    He was treated at the scene for "potentially serious injuries" before being taken to hospital.

    Visiting has been suspended at three hospitals as cases of Covid continue to rise in their communities.

    The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust said , externalit had paused a pilot visiting scheme at New Cross, Cannock Chase and West Park hospitals.

    All scheduled appointments will continue unless patients are contacted and the trust adds it will review the situation each week.

    Cases in Wolverhampton have risen to 118.9 per 100,000 people for the week up to 27 June compared to 57.7 for the week before.
