"Surprisingly I felt really calm on the first tee as I knew a few had come to watch," Mansell told BBC WM. "It was hard to get close to the pins, although I made a lot of greens and I only hit one bad shot at 10, when I lost my ball but, apart from that, it was solid, and I didn't do anything disastrous."

Rai is in the first group out on Friday at 06:35 BST, while Nuneaton's Andy Sullivan, who earlier shot a three-under 67, starts his second round at 11:36 and Mansell goes out at 12:09.

Councillor Ian Ward branded the move a "potentially disastrous decision at such a pivotal moment".

In his letter to Boris Johnson, he wrote that more than 500,000 people in Birmingham were not yet fully vaccinated and positive Covid cases and hospital admissions were increasing in the city.

"This decision will put people who are clinically vulnerable in an unfair position," Mr Ward wrote, adding: "I believe now is not the time to remove this legal requirement."

On Wednesday, West Midlands Mayor Andy Street announced passengers travelling on public transport in the West Midlands would be "expected" to wear face coverings, but he has no power to enforce this on trains and buses.

  17. Johnson: Highly probable worst of pandemic is overpublished at 13:27 British Summer Time 15 July 2021

In a speech in Coventry, the UK prime minister said: "I wish I could say that this pandemic that we have been going through is over and I wish I could say that from Monday we could simply throw caution to the winds and behave exactly as we did before we'd ever heard of Covid.

"But what I can say is that if we are careful and if we continue to respect this disease and its continuing menace then it is highly probable - almost all the scientists are agreed on this - the worst of the pandemic is behind us.

"There are difficult days and weeks ahead as we deal with the current wave of the Delta variant and there will be sadly more hospitalisation and more deaths but with every day that goes by we build higher the wall of vaccine acquired immunity."

Here's a reminder of how rules will change in England on Monday.
