    The influential figures who will be attending a summit hosted in Birmingham on Tuesday have signed a letter calling for "further and faster" action to protect the environment.

    The government has set a target to get the country to net zero by 2050, with a 78% reduction in emissions by 2035 compared with 1990 levels.

    Andy Street, Conservative mayor of the West Midlands and summit co-convenor, said: "We're asking ministers to give us the powers and the funding to do more.

    "We want to work hand-in-glove with Government to accelerate the drive to net zero."

  8. New chief constable is confirmedpublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 13 July 2021

    The new Chief Constable of West Mercia Police has been officially confirmed at a Police and Crime Panel.

    Pippa Mills, currently deputy chief constable with Essex Police, will take on the role.

    “I am impressed with her vision to deliver improvements in policing for our communities," the force's police and crime commisioner said.

    John Campion also extended his gratitude to the outgoing chief constable, Anthony Bangham, who announced his plans to retire in March.

    Ms Mills said “I am incredibly proud to have been confirmed as the first Female Chief Constable of West Mercia Police."

    She said she looked forward to beginning the role from September.

    The West Mercia force covers Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

    The England and Aston Villa player has accused the home secretary of hypocrisy over her condemnation of the racist abuse directed at his team-mates.

    Johnny Mercer said Mr Mings was "completely right", tweeting that he was "very uncomfortable with the position we Conservatives are needlessly forcing ourselves into."

    Mr Willis died aged 70 in 2019 and The Bob Willis Fund was set up to raise money in aid of prostate cancer in his memory.

    England and Aston Villa footballer Tyrone Mings has accused the home secretary of pretending to be disgusted by racist abuse, after she previously described taking the knee as "gesture politics".

    Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho were targeted after they missed penalties in the Euro 2020 final.

    Priti Patel said she was "disgusted" by the online abuse directed at the trio.

    Mings said she had "stoked the fire" by refusing to criticise fans who booed the England team for taking the knee.

    A Shropshire secondary school has closed for the remainder of the term due to confirmed cases of Covid-19.

    Idsall School, in Shifnal said a number of students have been confirmed to have the virus, while others are displaying symptoms and are self-isolating at home either awaiting tests or results.

    In a letter to parents,, external it said, because of this, it is closing the school for the remainder of the term and switching all lessons to Microsoft Teams.
