  1. Horse rescued after falling between two fencespublished at 09:36 British Summer Time 29 September 2021

    A horse has been rescued near Oswestry after falling down a steep bank and ending up upside down and wedged between two fences.

    Fire crews and a vet were called to Trefonen at 19:30 on Tuesday.

    Eight firefighters helped extract and right the 900kg shire horse - which is now recovering.

    A man is in a critical condition after being hit by a car in Great Barr.

    West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to Beeches Road at about 15:15 on Tuesday.

    A spokeswoman said: "Crews arrived to find the pedestrian, a man, in cardiac arrest following a collision with a car.

    "Ambulance staff quickly commenced advanced life support on scene and managed to restart the man’s heart."

    The man was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in a critical condition, the ambulance service added.

    The Brummies resumed racing at Perry Barr in 2007 after a long absence from competition.

    A new interactive film is being launched in schools today to tackle the problem of knife crime in the West Midlands.

    The virtual reality programme will challenge young people to make decisions about knives, which determine how the film ends.

    Knife crime has more than doubled in the region since 2012.

  16. Witness appeal after Gay Village attackpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    Police are appealing for help in identifying two women they believe may have witnessed an attack in Birmingham's Gay Village.

    A 26-year-old woman was seriously assaulted near The Village Inn on Hurst Street in the early hours of 16 September, West Midlands Police said.

    It's thought one of the women pictured may have gone to the victim's aid and detectives believe she may have vital information about the assailants.

    Three men arrested in connection with the assault have been bailed with strict conditions while investigations continue, police said.

  17. Council leader calls for key workers to get fuel prioritypublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    The leader of Birmingham City Council has asked for all key workers to be given priority access to fuel.

    Labour's Ian Ward said he felt that should also include care workers, social workers, home to school transport teams and day centre staff.

    He also said he feared the current measures being brought in to alleviate the fuel-rush would take time to come in to effect.

  18. Bridge to reopen to traffic for first time since July 2020published at 17:39 British Summer Time 28 September 2021

    The Old Wye Bridge in Hereford is going to reopen to traffic on Friday for the first time since July 2020.

    It was closed, along with the parking bays on Broad Street and Bridge Street, to allow people to socially distance more easily during the coronavirus pandemic.

    Herefordshire Council said the closure was also aimed at encouraging more people to walk or cycle in to town and it has seen increases in both.

    John Harrington, the cabinet member for infrastructure and transport, said: "I hope businesses who were initially cautious have seen the benefits of slower and less congested streets.

    "People of all ages and walks of life have commented on the enjoyment they have felt being able to walk along quieter routes or sit outside and have a drink."

    A pop-up vaccination centre is being set up at Staffordshire University's Stoke-on-Trent campus this week, as students arrive for the start of the new academic year.

    The university has hosted a number of pop-up vaccination centres and so far more than 1,400 students and staff have been vaccinated.

    Thirty pupils and one member of staff at a school in Herefordshire are isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.

    Face coverings will once again be required across the site, one-way systems will remain in place and sporting fixtures against other schools have been cancelled.

    The school's operational head teacher David Boyd said the cases are spread out among the school's 1,400 students and there are no clusters of infection.
