Read MoreA woman in her 90s has had about £30,000 stolen from her during a distraction burglary in Rowley Regis, West Midlands Police said.
On Thursday, at about 18:00, the force said, a man entered the woman's home posing as someone from the council and claiming he needed to check her water.
Meanwhile, the force said several other people entered the address and went upstairs with the pensioner being told they were also checking the water.
After they left, the force said, she realised the money had been taken.
Det Insp Phil Griffiths from Force CID, said: “We are determined to find who is behind this burglary that has understandably left this poor lady shaken. “Something I want to highlight is that a large amount of the money stolen is made up of old banknotes that would have to be changed for the new notes at banks."
He said the force was working with banks and urged anyone who was asked to change old notes for new ones to contact police immediately.

“We want all road users to feel safe travelling around Wolverhampton and that includes pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users as well as motorists," he said.

Protesters from Extinction Rebellion are blocking entry into Amazon sites across the UK, including its Coventry distribution centre.
Nathan McGovern, 22, from the city, is among those demonstrating on Black Friday.
He said they are “blocking and disrupting” access, with people locked into bamboo structures.
The protesters are “disrupting and stopping any lorries from exiting and entering this facility”, he added.
“We are doing this because of Amazon’s complicity and contribution to the climate crisis,” Mr McGovern said.
He said they are hoping to stay for 48 hours but it is up to individuals if they want to stay for that entire period.
In a statement, Amazon said: “These groups represent a variety of interests, and while we are not perfect in any area, if you objectively look at what Amazon is doing in each one of these areas you’ll see that we do take our role and our impact very seriously."
