    The Bishop of Hereford has said the world must take some responsibility for creating the conditions forcing people to flee their own countries.

    Five people have been arrested in connection with a fatal crossing in the Channel yesterday where 27 people died.

    The crossings have continued this morning, two boats have been brought to Dover carrying about 40 people.

    The Right Reverend Richard Jackson said it was an appalling situation: "What sort of desperation drives people to this sort of thing?

    "You know what was the situation in their own countries, how they were so vulnerable to be exploited by people like this?"

    He added: "We've really got to think about this at a global level. A lot of these people are coming from war zones for which we have to take some responsibility for the conditions that they're trying to escape from."

    The former chief fire officer for Warwickshire has died after a short illness.

    Kieran Amos joined Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service in April 2019 after a career in the fire sector that had spanned nearly 30 years, his colleagues said in a tribute.

    He "played a huge role" in the response to the pandemic, working across communities and will be remembered as "a skilled and dedicated colleague but, most importantly, as a very special person who was respected and loved by all who knew him".

    Birmingham New Street was the busiest station outside London, with 7.4 million passengers in the past year.

    Stratford in east London was Britain's busiest railway station with an estimated 14.0 million passengers travelling through, the first time in 17 years that Waterloo was not the most-used station.

    Figures released by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) are up to the end of March.

    A spokesman said the figures show leisure journeys are nearly back to pre-pandemic levels, while there has been a slower increase in commuter journeys.

    A 14-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was hit by a car in Birmingham last night.

    Emergency crews were called to Queslett Road in Great Barr at 18:10 GMT.

    He suffered critical injuries and currently remains in hospital, West Midlands Police said.

    The driver of the car, a VW Golf, stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their inquiries.

    Newport Swimming Pool is to close for five months to allow work to be carried out.

    Telford and Wrekin Council is spending £1m to reduce the depth, to make it more energy efficient and to make it easier to teach beginners.

    The pool will close on 6 December.

    An air source heat pump is also being installed and the council said the move would help the authority become carbon neutral by 2030.

    Birmingham looks likely to be one of 14 cities to host the 2022 Diamond League.

    Elite athletes will compete for points in 13 series meetings from May to September, with the most successful qualifying for the two-day season finale in Zurich.

    According to the provisional calendar for the competition, it will open in Doha on 13 May, likely followed by Birmingham, ahead of the city staging the Commonwealth Games later in the summer.

    After the athletics world championships from 15 to 24 July, the tournament will return to China and culminate in Zurich on 7 and 8 September.

    The BBC confirmed earlier this year it will broadcast the competition until 2024.

    The games will be held in Birmingham next summer.
