  5. New mayors elected on low turnoutpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Tim Bowles

Fewer than a third of registered voters used their ballot in the election of the first of six new English regional mayors.

The elections on 4 May will see "metro" mayors take the reins of groups of councils known as combined authorities.

Experts said this was better than the historically low turnouts for police and crime commissioners.

Conservative candidate Tim Bowles won the £62,000-a-year West of England post with 70,300 votes. Turnout was only 29.7%, with 199,519 voting out of a possible 671,280.

  17. Analysis: Swindon Town manager Luke Williams leaves clubpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Andrew Hawes
    BBC Wiltshire Swindon Town commentator

With fan frustration writ large at the County Ground, a continuation of the status quo was pretty much impossible.

Power has been open about the failure of the club's recruitment over the past year, and the interlude of Sherwood being the pivotal figure at the training ground didn't really help Williams either.

That said, questions remain over whether the style of play Williams was wedded to could both develop players for sale and get results in the nether regions of the EFL - both requirements of the job.

How much, or little control, his successor gets in the acquisition of new players could well define their fate.

  20. Attlee's granddaughter to run for Lib Dems in Yeovilpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

Jo Roundell GreeneImage source, Liberal Democrats

The granddaughter of Labour prime minister Clement Attlee has been named as the Liberal Democrats' general election candidate in Yeovil.

Jo Roundell Greene, who lives in Crewkerne, has been a councillor at South Somerset District Council since 2007 and deputy leader of the council since 2015.

But has now set her sights on following in the tradition of former Yeovil Lib Dem MPs Paddy Ashdown and David Laws — not to mention her illustrious grandfather.

    Quote Message

David Laws and I are delighted that the flame passes to Jo Roundell Greene who has been an exceptional councillor and champion for our area. I know that she will be a brilliant hardworking and effective Liberal Democrat MP who will fight for all, especially the most vulnerable in our communities.

Paddy Ashdown, Former Lib Dem party leader and MP for Yeovil
