    We spoke to a few voters in Bristol yesterday as they did their democratic duty, but it's fair to say the ones we spoke to haven't been exactly enthused by the campaign, or the role itself.

    Voters in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset have been electing their first metropolitan mayor.

    The polls closed at 10pm yesterday, and the result is expected in the early hours today.

    So before we find out who's been elected, what exactly is the role of West of England Combined Authority Mayor all about?

    It's a newly created role, and five other mostly urban areas in England have also voted for combined authority mayors.

    The other areas are Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region, Tees Valley and West Midlands.

  5. Gloucestershire council results: Labour loses seat to Conservativespublished at 01:17 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    The results are coming in thick and fast in Gloucestershire, this is what we know so far:

    Steve Lydon, labour leader of Stroud District Council, has lost his Dursley seat to the Conservatives. 

    Labour has also lost Barton&Tredworth and Grange&Kingsway in #Gloucester, external.

    But so far the Conservatives have held onto their seats in:

    • Hardwicke & Severn with Stephen Davies elected
    • Cam Valley with increased majority 

    Meanwhile the Greens have held onto Stroud Central.

  13. Counting under way in local and mayoral electionspublished at 00:00 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Ballot boxes

    The polls are closed and votes are being counted in local and mayoral elections across Britain.

    Some 4,851 council seats are up for grabs in 88 councils and six new "metro mayors" will be elected, covering areas including the West of England.

    Results are expected to come in through the night and all day on Friday.
