  3. Bristol mayor 'must act' on council's management crisispublished at 21:48 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    Marvin Rees

Bristol's elected mayor has been urged to "make decisions" and solve what has been described as a crisis in management at the city council.

Cross-party scrutiny board members say 14 posts are being filled with costly interim contracts and flagship projects are languishing.

They said mayor Marvin Rees had to come up with plans to fill the posts.

The council says it is reviewing its management structure and said vacancies were normal at a time of transition.

Labour mayor Mr Rees, who was elected in May 2016, told the BBC he would comment after next week's cabinet meeting.

  6. Doubts over Bristol's Arena growpublished at 21:02 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    Proposed Bristol Arena

The future of Bristol's Arena project is under further doubt after what's described as a crisis in management at the city council.

A group of councillors at Bristol City Council say there are "serious concerns" over the number of senior officers leaving the organisation, including three directly involved in the Arena project.

A spokesman for mayor Marvin Rees said the relatively high number of departures is perfectly normal and the council is halving its management costs.

But former deputy mayor, Councillor Geoff Gollop, said the delays to the project meant costs would almost certainly have gone up since former mayor George Ferguson quoted a £100m bill.

    Quote Message

At the moment there will be an assessment to see if it's viable, so that is what is going to cabinet next week. So the project is moving forward. But there's isn't a contractor in place and, given how long there hasn't been a contractor, it is certain the costs will have gone up because of inflation over that period.

Cllr Geoff Gollop, Bristol City Council

Yeovil Town Ladies were promoted to WSL 1 last season

Yeovil Town Ladies' status as a top-tier club is under threat, after the FA confirmed it was restructuring the women's game next year.

It's given the go-ahead for the creation of a new league that would only be open to teams that are fully professional.

Yeovil Ladies wouldn't be eligible as it is a part-time club.

It's understood the Lady Glovers are still planning to apply to be members of the new division.

But former Sunderland midfielder Jen O'Neill admits the changes spell big trouble.

    Quote Message

I worry that clubs won't be part of this, but if we want England to be the best then perhaps we need this collateral damage and there are clubs that will be left out. Do we want the women's game to progress or do we want to hold on to the traditions?

Jen O'Neill, Former Sunderland Ladies midfielder

It was earmarked for demolition, alongside the old hospital, by Bristol-based accommodation provider Unite - which wanting to put up a new student accommodation block.

Campaigners said the chapel was the earliest building in a style that developed in Bristol in the Victorian era - Bristol Byzantine.

Bristol heritage expert Mark Small said it would be "shameful" if the chapel was pulled down, but Unite said the development would "help meet the growing demand for accommodation from Bristol's population of students".
