  12. Still unclear what happened after man dies in 'firearms incident'published at 12:56 British Summer Time 27 September 2017

    Charlotte Callen
    BBC West home affairs correspondent

Much of our information at this time is coming from eyewitnesses, as there's been little in the way of information from Avon and Somerset police. They have only confirmed a man has died in a fast-moving incident that was "not terror related".

That, of course, makes it very difficult to break down exactly what has happened. But firstly, if what the witnesses say is correct - it appears stopping the car was planned to some degree as armed officers were part of the team.

And secondly, again if it's true, if an individual was "shot between five and ten times", then it would appear to be based on the idea of shoot-to-kill.

This means there was some imminent threat to life and that the officer must be able to justify, under the law, that their action was reasonable force to protect themselves or others.

What we don't know is: was the person who was shot armed?

It is standard procedure for any shooting to be referred to the IPCC for investigation - and we understand the IPCC have already been informed of this incident by Avon and Somerset Police.
