    An engineer had to have two fingers partially amputated after an accident while carrying out maintenance work at Ikea in Bristol.

    The furniture giant has been fined £100,000 after pleading guilty to a health and safety offence.

    Bristol City Council said the maintenance engineer, who has not been named, was checking a fault to a fan on the roof of the building.

    Ikea was also ordered to pay costs of £6,407 at the hearing at Bristol Magistrates on 03 October.

    The disaster aid charity Team Rubicon is in Palu, on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, helping victims of the tsunami and earthquake that claimed more than 1,700 lives.

    The Wiltshire-based team has been asked by the Indonesian authorities to provide drone support to the National Board for Disaster Management as they continue their recovery operation.

  5. Drugs driver and passenger arrestedpublished at 11:58 British Summer Time 8 October 2018

    A man was arrested in Devizes on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs and going equipped for stealing.

    Police stopped a Volkswagen Golf being driven by the 35-year-old man in London Road at about 23:30 BST on Sunday.

    A woman, 38, was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class A drug and gong equipped for stealing.

    Wiltshire police said the pair were both taken to Melksham for questioning.

    A sculpture honouring a gorilla that lived in a Cotswolds village a century ago was unveiled at the weekend.

    The ape, called John Daniel, was captured as a baby in Gabon, brought to the UK and put up for sale in a London department store.

    It was adopted by Alyce Cunningham, from Uley, Gloucestershire, in 1918 after her brother bought it for £300.

    The trial of a female teacher accused of sexual activity with a 16-year-old male pupil continues today.

    Eleanor Wilson, 29, is accused of having sex with the boy in an aeroplane toilet following a school trip in 2015.

    Last week, Bristol Crown Court heard Miss Wilson describe the boy's claims as "coming from his imagination".

    Ms Wilson, 29, denies four counts of sexual activity with a child under 18 while in a position of trust.

  11. Drugs criminal on the run could be in Westcountrypublished at 10:00 British Summer Time 8 October 2018

    A criminal on the run from prison could be in Somerset, Devon or Cornwall, police have warned.

    Adam Clarke, who was previously convicted of drugs offences, escaped from HMP Springhill in Buckinghamshire.

    Clarke is white, 5ft 11ins tall, of stocky build, bald, with blue eyes.

    He has tattoos of guns on his neck, the name 'Branden' tattooed on his left arm, and the name 'Kayleigh' tattooed on his right arm.

    When Clarke was last seen, he was wearing a light blue long sleeved jumper, dark coloured jeans, white trainers and a gold coloured watch.

    Actor John Leeson, who voiced K9 in Doctor Who, says "the time is now right" for there to be a female Doctor.

    Jodie Whittaker took on the role in the first episode of the new series on BBC One last night.

    Monday morning and it's another long queue for students looking to catch the bus at Bath University.

    First has blamed a shortage of drivers, buses and traffic conditions for the delays across the West over the past few weeks.

    The current queue stretches "around the corner in both ways".

  15. Giant WW1 poppy memorial unveiled in Wincantonpublished at 08:22 British Summer Time 8 October 2018

    A giant poppy featuring the names of every British and Commonwealth serviceman and woman lost in World War One was unveiled at the weekend.

    The 2.6m-tall (8.5ft) Poppy of Honour includes 1,115,471 individual remembrance poppies.

    A service took place in Wincanton in Somerset where the memorial made of steel and glass is on display.

    Each smaller poppy bears the name of a soldier, along with their rank and the date they were killed or went missing.
