  2. Emergency byelaw 'to protect salmon stock'published at 15:21 BST 14 June 2019

An emergency byelaw comes into force on Saturday to help protect salmon stock in the Severn Estuary.

The Environment Agency (EA) order means draft net and putcher fishing would be prohibited - and Lave net fishing, and rod and line, will operate on a catch-and-release basis only.

An EA spokesman said the move was necessary to protect this salmon population and comes after figures for the Severn, Wye and Usk, which salmon from the Severn Estuary migrate to, showed numbers to be extremely low.

"This has not been an easy decision to take. We have looked at other options, such as reduced catch limits for both net and rod fishermen and voluntary catch and release for lave net and rod fishermen, but felt that stopping any salmon being taken on the Severn this season through a by-law was necessary to protect salmon in the river," he said.

"We understand the impact this will have on fishermen, but only by the use of immediate and robust action, with cooperation from others, can we prevent the collapse of salmon stocks in the Severn in the future."

  6. Russian news station to challenge Ofcompublished at 14:37 BST 14 June 2019

A Russian television news channel has been permitted to legally challenge a watchdog's censure of its programmes about the Salisbury Novichok attack.

Ofcom ruled that programmes aired by RT after Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned in March 2018 breached impartiality rules.

However, RT, formerly known as Russia Today, said Ofcom's ruling was unfair and wants judges to stage a review.

A judge has now given RT the go-ahead to mount a High Court challenge. Mr Justice Lewis, who oversaw a preliminary High Court hearing in London, said lawyers representing the Kremlin-backed news channel had demonstrated an arguable case which should be fully analysed.

Lawyers representing Ofcom, which licenses RT to broadcast in the UK, had said the challenge should be blocked.

They said Ofcom's decision was justifiable and argued that there was "no prospect" of RT's challenge succeeding.

The judge was told that programmes at the centre of the dispute had been broadcast in March and April 2018. A date for any trial has yet to be set.

  13. Going Wild in the West Countrypublished at 11:54 BST 14 June 2019

Clare Balding walks with sisters Georgina and Rebecca - both mothers of young children - who started a group called Go Wild Go West to help inspire other young families to get out and enjoy the outdoors. They have happy childhood memories of exploring and adventuring in nature and are concerned that children today are losing touch with the thrill of walking and playing outdoors. They take Clare on a circular route around from East Harptree in North Somerset. It's a walk designed to delight and entertain the children who build a den, climb trees and find a rope swing along the way. The children are free to roam and explore with the mums a safe distance behind.

There are more walks and ideas for days out on their Facebook page GoWildGoWest

The walk is from East Harptree Woods up Smitham Hill and down Harptree Combe

  18. Work on A417 'missing link' to start in 2021published at 09:37 BST 14 June 2019

Work to fix the A417 ‘missing link’ will start in Autumn 2021, Highways England have confirmed.

The preferred solution to the problem stretch through the Cotswolds was announced in March.

The chosen option for the last stretch of single carriageway on the A417 east of Gloucester, between Brockworth and Cowley, will see a new section of road through Shab Hill.

The road changes will be 3.4miles (5.5km) in length and will cost £435m to build.

The new road will also have a speed limit of 70mph.

The A417 runs between Gloucester, Cirencester and Swindon and is used by many motorists travelling between London and the West Midlands as a shortcut between the M4 and the M5.

The existing road bottlenecks at the Air Balloon roundabout near Birdlip, but after the scheme finishes it will be removed and the Air Balloon pub will be demolished.

In 2014, it was reported there had been 340 casualties on the road in 15 years.

The next step of the project will involve more detailed design work and further public consultation before a formal planning application is submitted.

    Quote Message

We are hoping to start construction in late 2021 and have the route open for traffic in early 2024, but this is all subject to successful completion of the planning process and funding as part of the Government’s RIS2 announcement.
