  11. 'We're talking six or seven times more water going through the river'published at 12:33 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2023

    Ian Withers

Our reporter Matt Faulkner has been to Westover pumping station to meet Ian Withers from the Environment Agency.

He says: "We have a volume going through the Parrett, right now, of 162 cubic metres a second.

That’s a huge amount of water – we’re talking six or seven times more than we expect going through the river."

He says while the rivers are full, "everything is going to plan" and the pumping stations are doing everything they should.

“We’ve got a lot of rainfall coming through the system from the last 24 hours or so and we’ve got further rain forecast.

    Inside the pumping station

"The rivers are full, the fields and the drains and the channels are saturated and any extra rainfall has an impact and other consequences on the channel.

The rivers are at bank full and could fill into the moors. That’s probably what’s going to happen over the next day or so in many parts of Somerset," he added.

“But that’s what’s designed to happen. The moors are designed to receive water out of the rivers and then we can pump them out when the channel level goes down in the main rivers."

“This is the first of many typical winters storms that we expect in Somerset.

“We are as ready as we can be.”
