  3. Police commissioner calls for lower drink-drive limitpublished at 16:48 British Summer Time 12 October 2016

    Adam Jinkerson
    BBC Local Live

Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite has written to MPs asking for a review into the current drink-drive law, saying a reduction in accepted amount would lower alcohol-related deaths by 10%.

"A number of fatalities on our roads in the last few months has brought the issue into focus and we are keen to pursue a number of strategies to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads," he said.

    Male drinking

"England and Wales have one of the highest drink-drive limits in the world.

"Lowering the drink-drive limit to 50mg would reduce drink-driving deaths by at least 10%."

The proposed alcohol limit before driving would be equivalent to a pint of beer or large glass of wine for a man and half a pint of beer or a small glass of wine for a woman.

Currently, the law allows drivers to have up to 80mg of alcohol per 100ml blood - as a rough guide, that's just under two pints of beer.
