Two of the most controversial parts of the county council's plans to cut its budget are being discussed at a meeting of the children's committee this afternoon.

The authority needs to save £120m over the next five years.

The proposals included reducing the number of looked-after children and cutting the provision of children's centres.

To save money it wanted to reduce the number of children taken into care by more than half, but in a report being discussed by councillors today this plan has been called "unsafe" and "unachievable".

Also being discussed is a report giving more details on how to save £1m from children's centres, which provide support for families of under-fives around Cambridgeshire.

A statement from the county council says: "Vulnerable children will receive the best standard of care from us, and we want to ensure these children are only in our care for as long as is necessary."

    Andrew Sinclair
    BBC Look East political correspondent

The MP for South Cambridgeshire, Heidi Allen, has spoken out in Parliament against the government's plans for grammar schools.

She told MPs that schools in Cambridgeshire still receive a lower amount of funding per pupil than some other areas of the country and she expressed concern that setting aside money for grammar schools could make things worse.

    Heidi Allen in parliament

"How can [grammar schools] possibly be of higher priority than fixing the flawed funding model which has seen thousands of children seriously underfunded for decades in counties like mine?" she asked.

The education secretary Justine Greening said she was still determined to sort out the national funding formula but added that when it came to grammar schools, the government had an ambition for an "education that promotes social mobility".
