The Nene Park Trust, the charity that manages Ferry Meadows, says it is "saddened by this latest incident", which will cost £10,000 to clean up.

"We will be working hard to remove the graffiti, but it is so extensive this will take some time," said a spokeswoman for the charity.

The proposed line between the two university cities will use part of the former "Varsity Line" that was decommissioned in the 1960s and connect to Milton Keynes, Aylesbury and Bedford.

Last week, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling announced it will be run by a new organisation called East West Rail, with the government pledging £110m for the project.

It's thought the line, due to be fully open in the 2020s, will generate millions of pounds for the region's economy.

  7. Posh sail past Chesterfieldpublished at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

It was goals galore for our local sides this weekend.

Peterborough United thrashed Chesterfield 5-2 on Saturday.

Posh hit the front after just 25 seconds as Tom Nichols steered in a Paul Taylor cut-back, but they found themselves trailing to two deflected goals in quick succession.

However, goals from Gwion Edwards, Paul Taylor and Michael Bostwick (pictured) easily saw off their opponents in a seven-goal thriller.

Boss Grant McCann said he was impressed with his side's second-half performance.

"We showed what we can do," said McCann after the game.

"I'll always demand of the boys. There's so much more potential in this squad."

Posh remain sixth in League One.
