  2. Firefighter's turkey stolen in Fulbourn raidpublished at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2016

    Jozef Hall
    BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

As mentioned, £15,000-worth of meat has been stolen from Beaumont butchers in Fulbourn.

The thieves made off with many Christmas orders of gammon, lamb, beef and turkey.

One of those turkeys was a donation to Parkside Fire Station in Cambridge.

Mark Goldsmith (below) from the fire service, who was hoping to collect the gift, said "it is very disappointing".

"Every year we get a kind donation from the butchers for our Christmas dinner," he said.

    Mark Goldsmith

"Unfortunately we turned up today and found out the turkey had been stolen.

"To think somebody has gone out of their way to steal someone else's turkey is very disappointing."

Beaumont says about 200 customers have been affected.

Last week farm shops in Gamlingay and Bourn were also raided for meat. We've yet to hear from police if the spate of thefts is linked.

A family-run butchers in Fulbourn has had £15,000-worth of meat stolen just days before Christmas.

Beaumont Butchers had various meats such as gammon, lamb, beef and turkey stolen from a refrigerated unit.

Angela Steward, who works at the butchers, called it "an inconvenience".

    Angela Steward

"It's not so much the stock has gone - that can be replaced. It's an inconvenience after the amount of work people have put in over the past few days in the lead up to Christmas.

"I could see the lock had been cut, so I opened the fridge and the contents were gone."

The butchers says it's still trying to honour its customers' Christmas orders.

  11. Church roof lead theft 'could be hate crime'published at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2016

    Jozef Hall
    BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

If you're heading to church this Christmas, fingers crossed you don't look up mid-carol and wonder where the roof has gone.

More than 25 lead thefts over the last eight months have cost Cambridgeshire's churches about £750,000.

In Swavesey recently, thieves stole a third of an acre's worth of lead from the roof.

Temporary plastic on a church roof
    Image caption,

Ian, a warden at Swavesey Church, shows where thieves stole part of the roof.

Now police are mooting an idea that could see the theft reclassified as a hate crime. Currently, it's classed as property theft.

Insp Dick Turner, from Cambridgeshire Police, says it's an idea "being discussed".

"Lead theft is raising its head as a significant problem for Cambridgeshire, and reclassifying it as a hate crime is an idea that has merit. It's one of a number of suggestions to tackle the problem.

"Reclassification could improve sanctions and punishments if matters were brought to court."

  15. Renting out police property 'could mean more police'published at 08:39 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2016

    Paul Stainton
    BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

The police and crime commissioner for Cambridgeshire is insisting that closing police buildings does not mean a reduced police presence.

Twelve offices have been shut in the past four years, cutting the number from 41 to 29.

Jason Ablewhite told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire the stations in March and Thorpe Wood in Peterborough would not be closed, but Parkside in Cambridge could become a "satellite office".

    Jason Ablewhite

"Parkside is only 20% occupied by operational policing. It's actually one of the biggest and most expensive real estates we sit on," said Mr Ablewhite.

"Rather than selling off the family silver, we can redevelop the buildings and rent them out and that'll bring vital income in.

"That could mean more police over time."
