A man in his 60s has been assaulted in Horningsea after three men burst into his home.

The attack happened about 18:00 yesterday on Priory Road.

One of the men pushed the victim to a bedroom and held him down on a bed while the other offenders searched the property. It is believed the offenders made off with money.

The victim believes one of the offenders, who spoke with an Irish accent and is described white, in his 30s, about 6ft tall, "powerfully built" and wearing a dark hooded top, had visited his home earlier in the week.

The second offender is described as about 5ft 7in tall, in his early 20s, with a black afro hairstyle and stubble. The victim was unable to give a description of the third offender.

Council tax in Peterborough looks set to go up by 5% in April - 1% higher than originally planned.

The authority has just released the second part of its budget for 2017-18.

Five percent is the maximum that councils are able to put their tax up by without having a referendum.

The council says it has no choice but to make the increase as it's faced with a £28m budget gap.

It's also looking at a similar increase next year.

A sculpture commissioned by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust has been unveiled at Sawston Village College.

Pupils at the south Cambridgeshire school worked with artist and former pupil Neil Jones to create a wall sculpture inspired by the Gillian Clark poem "Birdsong".

Jonathan Culpin, principal of the college, said it was a "very exciting project to be involved in".

"The sculpture signifies hope and how life can carry on after some of these horrible things have taken place," he said.

"There is a sense of horror, but also a sense of strength and resilience."

Today marks Holocaust Memorial Day - the date the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated in 1945.

A former coach and football scout is arrested over allegations of abuse in the sport.

MPs and business leaders have been told that plans to upgrade the Ely rail junction are complex and will take a while to deliver.

There's been a long campaign to improve the junction, which would allow for more frequent services from King's Lynn and Norwich to Cambridge, Peterborough and on to London.

Network Rail told a summit in Downham Market earlier that due to problems in redesigning the junction and a nearby level crossing it wouldn't be able to start work until after 2019.

The meeting was told that improving the junction would bring a significant boost to the local economy.

Today local councils and business groups pledged almost £8m to fund a study into the project to keep things moving.

We know the man arrested today by Cambridgeshire Police in its ongoing investigation into abuse in football is Michael Sean Carson, better known as "Kit".

Mr Carson, 74, is well known in footballing circles locally and indeed internationally, for what has at times been described as his "pioneering" youth development work - working with youngsters between the ages of nine and 16, and organising more than 30 tournaments abroad.

He joined Norwich City as youth manager in 1983, leaving 10 years later to take up the post of academy director at Peterborough United.

It was there, over the next 10 years at London Road, working with mangers including Chris Turner and Barry Fry, that Mr Carson developed a reputation for excellence within youth coaching, nurturing 13 youngsters to international honours.

In 2001, Mr Carson moved to Cambridge United, becoming head of youth development under manager Jon Taylor - a position he held until 2006.

Following a spell with Histon Football Club, he began coaching youth teams in Finland from 2012. It's unclear whether he's still actively involved coaching there.

We understand the allegations relate to his work at Cambridge United and Peterborough United.

Police confirmed they arrested a man in his 70s at his Cambridge home and took him into custody on suspicion of indecency with children, and indecent assault.

Cambridgeshire Police are encouraging anyone with concerns about these allegations to contact them on 101 or the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000.

It's not every day you have to consult your Middle English dictionary at the train station...

But it appears a word, which originated from the year 1150, slipped into a departure board at Cambridge train station this morning.

Dominic Smith spotted the use of the word "thence" to describe the fact the train would be heading to London King's Cross on the 07:55 service.

A spokesman for Greater Anglia, which runs the station, said: "It is the first and last time it will be used at a Greater Anglia station."

A man in his 70s has been arrested in connection with allegations of abuse related to football in Cambridgeshire.

Detectives arrested the man at a property in Cambridge this morning.

The man, who is in his 70s and from Cambridge, has been arrested on suspicion of indecency with children and indecent assault.

He is currently in police custody.

"A fresh start" is how an extension to the lease of The Green Backyard in Peterborough is being described this morning.

The charity on Oundle Road has just been given a 12-year lease by the city council.

It promotes gardening, green spaces and wildlife off one of Peterborough's busiest junctions.

There had been uncertainty regarding its future, with campaigners battling for five years to save it.

Paul Hetherington, from the charity, says the new lease "means everything".

"It's really thanks to all of the people of Peterborough and the surrounding area that made the council listen," he said.

Irene Walsh, cabinet member for communities and environment capital at the city council, called the site "an oasis of tranquillity".    

As part of the new lease, The Green Backyard will have to adhere to a set of recommendations from the council, including a six-month window to make improvements to the appearance of the site.

A woman has died in a crash on the northbound carriageway of the A1 at Eaton Socon.

The collision, between a Ford Focus and a Vauxhall Astra, happened at about 15:00 yesterday.

The driver of the Ford, aged in her 30s, died at the scene. Police have appealed for witnesses.
