An environmental campaigner and a climate scientist, both based in Cambridge, have co-authored a climate change book with help from royalty.

The 52-page guide to climate change is co-written by Tony Juniper and British Antarctic Survey scientist Dr Emily Shuckburgh, along with the Prince of Wales.

The book aims to explain the complex subject of climate change in a simple form.

Ms Shuckburgh told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire it was "an absolute pleasure" to work with Prince Charles.

"He was very heavily involved from the start", she said.

"We sat around the same table and went through every page of the book together.

"Hopefully the book will be accessible to anyone and everyone."

  8. Biker was travelling at 'one of the highest speeds' ever recordedpublished at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2017

    Patrick Byrne
    BBC News

A motorcyclist caught travelling at "one of the highest" speeds ever recorded on a Cambridgeshire road has been sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work.

Simon Anthony, 56, of Orchard Mews, Woodston, appeared today at Cambridge Crown Court after pleading guilty to speeding at an earlier hearing.

He was clocked at 160mph on a BMW bike on the A47 at Thorney, on Sunday 14 August. The limit along the stretch is 70mph (112km/h).

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth heard that there had been few vehicles on the road at the time, it had been a bright day and the ground was dry.

"Driving a motorcycle at 160mph, even with dry conditions and in broad daylight, is extremely dangerous," he told him. "Not least to you."

Anthony was clocked on a laser device by officers from the road policing unit, as they sat in a lay-by off the dual carriageway.

Officers said the speed - more than twice the national limit - was "one of the highest" they had ever recorded.

PC Dave Black said the road "was not a racetrack".

"My immediate thought was, this is going very fast," he said.

"But when I saw 160mph on the laser, I was shocked. He's certainly the fastest person I've ever stopped."

  14. N & P closure: No decision on job lossespublished at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2017

More on the story we brought you yesterday on the closure of some branches of the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society.

The N&P was taken over by the Yorkshire Building Society (YBS) six years ago, who promised to retain the brand for two years and not close any branches.

YBS said one of the reasons for the move is that banking market has changed with more customers preferring to do their banking online.

    Yorkshire Building Society sign

Across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire, 28 branches will disappear, putting jobs at risk. The remaining 17 branches will be rebranded under the YBS name.

Mike Regnier, chief executive of YBS, says they haven't confirmed anything about the number of jobs to be lost.

The society will enter a consultation process with those who could be affected, and it "could take up to 18 months in some cases".

"That gives us as much time as we can to find roles for as many people as possible and we'll redouble efforts to make sure as many of those colleagues as possible can find roles within the business."

The N&P has its headquarters in Peterborough, and Mr Regnier says the site will remain part of the Yorkshire Building Society.

Rory McGrath's wife Nicola left Huntingdon Magistrates' Court with her husband's arm around her, after she had heard about a catalogue of deceit.

McGrath admitted harassing a woman after she had ended their affair.

Angela Rafferty, mitigating, said of McGrath, from Cambridge, and the complainant: "He was in love with her. He thought she loved him."

The woman, described as a writer and broadcaster, is "a much younger and very attractive and glamorous woman", the lawyer said.

"While Mr McGrath may not thank me for saying this, it may be that there's a mid-life crisis element to this from her enthusiastic sexual interest in him."

She said the rejection caused McGrath "real and genuine pain" and the situation "escalated".

"His marriage has been threatened but it's the case that he's now today a sad and wise man," added Ms Rafferty.

"Their relationship is healing and her (Mrs McGrath) ability to be magnanimous and understand his conduct is nothing short of phenomenal.

"She's not someone who came into his life since he was successful. They've been together since they were students."

    BBC News

Rory McGrath 60, was spared jail because of the mitigation heard in his favour and his guilty plea at Huntingdon Magistrates' Court, a judge said.

Between June 2015 and August 2016, comedian and TV star McGrath harassed a woman who had ended their long-standing affair, by sending her emails, approaching her in the street and following her. He also sent letters to the woman's husband.

District judge Ken Sheraton, sentencing, said: "This was a persistent, consistent and controlling imposition of yourself on the victim and those close to her."

He noted McGrath, of Grantchester Street in Cambridge, went to the workplace of the complainant's husband and also close to her workplace, and he said there was "use or threats of use" of photos.

The judge said only a custodial sentence was appropriate, but he felt able to suspend this after hearing mitigation including McGrath's guilty plea.
