    Increased cloud cover will bring the risk of some showers overnight, but as skies clear later, temperatures will drop to 0C (32F), giving the risk of frost and icy patches.

  4. Blackmailer who uncovered school governor's indecent child images jailedpublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    The burglar who attempted to blackmail a former Peterborough school governor was jailed at the city's crown court on 30 October 2015.

    Andrew Brown's offences were uncovered when he told police he'd received a blackmail letter from Ryan Penfold. It said there were indecent images on items taken during a break-in at his house and demanding £8,000 for his silence. 

    Brown (below), who was a governor at the King's School, claimed the burglar must have placed the images on his devices in order to blackmail him, but forensic analysis found images which pre-dated the break-in.

    Penfold, 40, of Tirrington, Bretton in Peterborough, pleaded guilty to burglary, handling stolen goods, blackmail and possession of class A and B drugs.

    He was sentenced to four months for handling, one month for possession of the Class B drug, two months for the possession of the Class A drug and two years and eight months for blackmail, with the sentences to run concurrently.

  5. Tree planting plan in Peterborough keeps on growingpublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Seven years ago an ambitious project was launched in Peterborough to plant one tree for everyone person living in the city by 2030. 

    Since then the Forest for Peterborough, external scheme has grown and grown and this year 6,000 trees were planted, meaning the full total now stands at 99,506. 

    The next set of planting will begin again in October when the charity behind the idea, Peterborough City Trust, is hoping to reach the 100,000 milestone, but only if they can secure pockets of land to grow them on.

    The YMCA in Peterborough and Cambridge say more people aged 50 and over are becoming interested in the gym.

    The charity, which traditionally works with youth groups says they're working to inspire the older generation. 

    John, 82, (pictured below) and one of their oldest members, says going to their gym in Peterborough has "changed my life". 

    He says 10 years ago he contracted an infection in his spine, leaving him unable to walk, but after starting light exercise, he's getting some feeling and movement back in his left leg.

    Carol Cook, a wellbeing coach from Age UK Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, says getting active in old age is all about doing "bite sized chunks" and making small changes. 

    She recommends doing some exercises, external at home, joining a social active group or parking further away at the supermarket and walking. 

  7. School governor jailed for indecent child images, caught after theftpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Andrew Brown, 61, from Montague Road in Peterborough was caught after reporting the theft of various devices and phones from his home in October 2015.

    He told officers he had received a blackmail letter from the thief saying there were indecent images on the items, and demanding £8,000 for his silence.

    Brown denied any knowledge of them, saying the burglar must have placed the images on his devices in order to blackmail him.

    However, when police recovered his phones and memory sticks, forensic analysis uncovered more than 700 indecent images, 170  of which were graded category A - the most severe - which pre-dated the break-in.

    Brown was charged with a number of offences and was found guilty of three counts of possessing indecent images of a child, two counts of making indecent images of a child and one count of possessing prohibited images of a child.

    Det Sgt James Weston described the case as "complicated" because of Brown's "position of trust... and his denial throughout the investigation regarding the possession of indecent images of children".

    He was jailed for two years, placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years and made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years.

    A former school governor caught with hundreds of indecent images of children - some as young as three - has been jailed for two years. 

    Andrew Brown, 61, of Montague Road, Peterborough, had claimed a burglar planted the material on his computer.

    Brown, who was chairman of governors at Peterborough's King's School before his arrest in 2015, was found guilty of six charges relating to images of children. 

    He's been jailed at Peterborough Crown Court.

  9. Lid Dem leader calls for 'fight against a hard Brexit'published at 14:44 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    The leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron, has been on the election campaign trail in Cambridge today, promising that his party will be a "strong opposition" and that "Britain can do better".

    He came to show support for Lib Dem candidate, Julian Huppert, who lost his parliamentary seat in 2015 to Labour's Daniel Zeichner.

    He says in an area that heavily voted to remain in Europe we must "fight against a hard Brexit".

    "Leaving the European Union with a hard Brexit will massively limit the number of people available in the workforce to build [affordable] properties" he said. 

    "Here in Cambridge you have the chance to change Britain's future, don't cry into your beer or latte over what has just happened, decide this is your moment to change Britain for good."

    Cambridge voted 74% to 26% in favour of remaining in the EU, in contrast to the 52%-48% national vote in favour of leaving.

    Blink and you might miss it.... but one of the regional finals of the Race For The Line, external competition has been taking place at RAF Wittering today. 

    It's to encourage pupils aged 11 to 16 to make a foam rocket car powered by a small solid fuel rocket motor, and pit it against rival teams.

    The winners will then take part in the National Finals at Santa Pod Raceway, external at Podington near Rushden on 29 June.

    Get your headbands out, trainers on and water bottles filled as a series of free running sessions are returning to Peterborough. 

    They'll be held at the Embankment Athletics Track, external in Bishop's Road every Wednesday from 3 May to 5 July between 07:30 and 08:30 and later at 12:00 to 13:00. 

    You don't have to book, just turn up and run.

    The TV presenter, Diane Louise Jordan, from Holme in Huntingdonshire, has spoken out after a suspended sentence was handed out to a woman, who admitted in court that she lied to police when claiming Ms Jordan harassed her. 

    The star of Songs of Praise told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire show that she's been on a "horrible three year roller coaster".

  16. Woman sentenced for lying about TV presenter harassmentpublished at 11:56 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    A woman who accused TV presenter Diane Louise Jordan of harassing her has been given a suspended sentence after admitting she lied to police.

    Kayla Thomas, 24, of Mill Park, Cambridge, told officers Ms Jordan harassed her in 2014 and 2015.

    The presenter was given two harassment notices, but denied abusing Thomas, who was her former son-in-law's partner.

    Thomas admitted perverting the course of justice and was sentenced to 18 months in jail, suspended for two years.

    The judge at Cambridge Crown Court also issued Thomas with a restraining order, preventing her going near Ms Jordan for 10 years.

  18. 'Unprecedented' number of cash machines stolen in Peterboroughpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    It's not just cash machines which are being stolen in Cambridgeshire. 

    It's been revealed that eight car park ticketing machines in Peterborough have been taken since December. 

    The city council say about £1,000 has been stolen from machines, with £44 being the smallest amount.

    To combat the "unprecedented" problem they state they've "made a number of changes" with all machines being emptied every night. 

    At the Wirrina car park, where four machines have been taken, it now only accepts cashless payments.

  20. Man charged following Ipswich stabbingpublished at 10:14 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    A man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of a knife in a public place, following a stabbing in Dogs Head Street in Ipswich earlier this month.

    The 20-year-old, who's due to appear before magistrates in Ipswich today, has also been charged in connection with possession of crack cocaine and cannabis, in connection with offences in Cambridge on 26 April.

    Two other men have previously been arrested in connection with the Ipswich stabbing, both on suspicion of assisting an offender. 

    The men, a 49-year-old from Ipswich and a 26-year-old from Liverpool, have both been interviewed and released under investigation.    

    The victim, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.
