Read MoreA Cambridge city councillor has called for a rethink of the city's tourism strategy.
Independent councillor John Hipkin says "mass day tripping" is bringing very little in to the local economy and is overcrowding the city centre.
Mr Hipkin says six million tourists visit Cambridge every year, but he suggested they should be encouraged to visit other parts of Cambridgeshire.
"I'm not anti-tourism, but I'm anxious that we have a new kind of tourism. We need tourism which leaves the city sustainable," he said.
"Why not get tourists to visit the lovely towns and villages which surround the city?
"I think Ely is currently as pleasant as Cambridge was 20-30 years ago."

A 24-year-old man has died after a collision on Peakirk Road, Northborough, yesterday afternoon.
The man was driving a Renault Kangoo when it was involved in a collision with a black Vauxhall Astra.
Emergency services were called at about 13:45, but the man had died at the scene.
A 28-year-old woman, who was driving the Vauxhall Astra, and her two young passengers had serious injuries and were taken to Peterborough City Hospital.
Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call the road policing unit on 101.
Plans to demolish Rhubarb Bridge in Peterborough could be postponed after a public campaign to save it.
The city council said the bridge had come to end of its life, and planned to replace it with a series of paths and crossings at the roundabout where Bourges Boulevard meets the Soke Parkway.
The council is now exploring the option to allocate the money it was going to spend on demolition, to repair the bridge.
Simon Machin, corporate director of growth and regeneration at Peterborough City Council, said: "Following public feedback we have listened to people's concerns.
"Ultimately the bridge will have to be demolished, but what we're going to try and do is put it on life support for another five or so years by spending some of the budget on more extensive patching of the structure."
More than 600 drivers in Cambridgeshire had their cars crushed last year for having inadequate insurance, according to research from BBC East.
Police seized 1,500 vehicles in 2016, and 40% ended up in the scrapyard, because the owners didn't pay a fine and obtain cover.
Data from the Motor Insurers' Bureau suggests uninsured driving may be rising for the first time in more than 10 years.
Crispin Moger from Marmalade, external insurance, based in Peterborough, says rising insurance costs are part of the problem.
"There's always a proportion of society who will just do what they want and not pay for insurance. That's a difficult problem and something we need to find a solution for," he said.
"A big majority of people try and do the right thing, but some people can't afford these increases."

The weather is on the turn, and we're going to notice quite a change, depending on whereabouts in the region you are.
We have a cold front approaching, so the further north and west you are, the more chance you have of seeing cloud increase during the day but also quite a drop in the temperature, only getting to the high teens for Cambridgeshire, parts of Norfolk and Northamptonshire.
Further south though, Essex in particular, we're looking at temperatures of about 25C (77F).
